Postage costs at RS UK
« on: July 23, 2020, 04:01:40 pm »
I was about to order a few parts from RS this week only to find that they now charge a few pounds for shipping for orders under £30.

I don't think that it was that long ago that next day delivery was free for any order size.  It was great to be able to order semiconductors knowing that they were genuine, without paying more than the cost of them on shipping.   I do appreciate that we had a good thing there.

I'm looking for a few MPSA42s and I'm pretty most of them on eBay will be fakes.  I read that 'Fake Threat In the Open Market ' ~70%.  As I want to switch 180 volts through them, I'd rather them be genuine.

Everywhere I looked seems to want £4 or more for shipping.  Are there any other ways to buy small numbers of components without being stung with the postage ?

Thanks

Unless you need them urgently wait until you have some other components to order to get the amount over £30.

I use Farnell but the game is the same... I put some things in my basket... leave it for 2 days and if I'm not up to £30 my threshold drops and I round up a few quantities and add a few bits which might be useful for inventory... in next to no time you can submit... Normally 1 day later I think of something that I forgot.  :)

Yep, it was good while it lasted, I suspect too many people ordered a couple of £ worth of bits they'd forgotten and as all their stuff is delivered by  courier , I suspect the costs became too much for them.

RS used to send small orders by first class post,  it really wouldn't have been expensive especially for a large organisation.
I suspect the change is due to COVID - costs have risen and removing free delivery is one way to shore up costs.  CPC's minimum order also shot up to £17.50

As a result I now order far less from either of these companies but I'm sure they know what they are doing.  Hopefully prices will fall in the near future.

Already discussed in  https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/nooo!-rs-components-what-have-you-done-ruined-my-with-new-delivery-charge/

Thanks. I did actually look to see if anyone else had raised it but missed that one.

It wasn't obvious in the beginners section (the only reason I remembered it).  :)

Yes it's fairly recent, still free with no MOQ for business accounts. To be honest I was surprised they had it at all.

FYI there are a few ebay sellers who make a business out of this - they have accounts with RS and Farnell that give free shipping, and when you buy from them they order the stuff delivered directly to you. Surprised me the first time it happened, I'd ordered some component from a UK ebayer and it turned up direct from RS.
