Powerfull UV-C led

"Japan-based Nikkiso has developed 280nm UV-C LED devices with optical output power of 75mW for use in disinfection. Nikkiso has cooperated with its US-based subsidiary AquiSense Technologies to offer water purifiers, with the smallest model equipped with three UV-C LED chips able to purify 2-3 liters of water per minute."

That is a lot of power from an LED at 280nm.

I wonder what the efficiency will be like?  The last time I checked, they were very poor like an old 70's era LED.  They could be really useful in off-grid water treatment where the instant-on capability can overcome less than stellar efficiency.

75mW seems like a miniscule amount of power.

You can get quartz T5/T8 tubes that are 30-40% efficient, so 20W tube is 8W of germicidal output. With that you can process perhaps a few GPM.
Although of course you can't get small tubes like these LEDs.

I'm surprised if it can do 2-3 LPM, thats impressive if its a realistic number.

I've often wondered if it would make more sense to do up a fluorescent bulb with inductive excitation for frequent start/stop type purifiers.
Last time I looked LG Innotek ones did something like 2mW with 140mW in.    And they aren't exactly cheap!
