Private Messages - File Attachments
« on: August 08, 2015, 06:41:01 pm »
I just noticed that you can't attach a file or picture to a PM.  Is this the default setting or was there a specific reason for picking that setting?

My guess is: in a regular forum post the file is used by many people. In a PM, it is by just one. Space on the EEVBlog servers is limited, so attachments in PMs are disabled, because they need space, while few people benefit from it. Also frequency.

My best guess is that it stops any possible piracy via the blog and therefore rendering dave being held responsible

Yep. I don't want the forum server filled up with private message attachments, sorry.

I just noticed that i can have max 5 messages in my in/outbox. In 2018 that seems to be reaaaaallllyyyyy low....

I understand that the same logic applies here too (discuss in the boards rather then via PM) but it's still really bad... can't that be higher?

When the outbox is full, the outhouse should be used. It can be utilized to full capacity, then call the suction truck.

I don't have that limit - but perhaps there are some other limitations because of your low post count.  I know a change has been made to prevent any member with less than 5 posts from using the PM system here.

That must be it, can't see the limitation anymore. Kind of funny that my post here complaining about it got me past the limit [emoji3]

Yeah - I noticed your post count before and wondered if that would be the case.

Seems we all know now  ;D

Is it possible to enable private message attachments and make it so they're automatically deleted, after a predetermined length of time?

I simply PM a link to my OneDrive .. or DropBox .. or GoogleDrive .. or personal FTP Server on my NAS .. or .. or .. or ..

Saves Dave having to pay $$$ for hard disk space and other costs such as volunteers time dealing with issues.

I use IMGUR for images, literally as easy as CTRL-V the image and you get a link.

It might be, if limiting disk space usage was the only consideration. But it's not. The other serious concern is legality of content.
Attachments to forum posts are seen by many, and anything significantly illegal will rapidly be reported to mods, and deleted.
PMs don't get that scrutiny. So, allowing attachments in PMs could be a real legal hazard for Dave. Not going to happen.

Just use an general purpose fileshare service, and pass links in PMs.

Problem with 3rd party services for images in general is they come and go and delete content and break links or put pay walls up, it's a reoccurring theme over time. So on the forum as a whole, best to host files locally if at all possible and if bandwidth gets out of control use a caching service.

There are some downsides to self hosting images but all manageable. Hosting storage costs are also improving, most customers pay for storage they never use and that is sold on and on to other customers. So it's factored into the cost and a lot has changed since the dedicated disk days.

As much as I like stories, it's unlikely Dave would be held liable for content exchanged between two people in a private context. But you don't want to encourage file sharing, so it makes sense to limit that.

So what? PMs are pretty much by definition one-read-only. If the recipient wants to save a file linked to in a PM, that's their job.

You're completely failing to allow for hostile intent, the extremes of what some people might attach, and the Law's lack of a sense of humor and leniency.

So, you think PMs should allow attachments? Not going to happen. Use email or fileshare service, or nothing.

What about have the attachments be emailed to the user? Then the storage issue is on the user side.
