I'm certainly happy with my CEM "EX520 equivalent" meters. The update rate on the 6000count meters is much faster and I'm pretty sure the analog bar has a faster update rate than the main display (though its hard to tell). Still not as fast as the Fluke bar display he demonstrated however. Everything else about them is pretty much the same. Good for low-mid range meters but if I was spending $300+ I'd still go with something like a Fluke/Agilent/Gossen etc

I'd have to concur. Not on the same level as my 87's but really well made meters, that I'm happier to leave in the back of the vehicles. The backlight time out is infuriating and next to useless, but everything else about then is a pleasure to use.
There are lots of badge engineered versions of these meters but most appear to be clones of the lower end models of the 500 series. Has anyone got comparative feedback across the model range?

The backlight timeout on most meters irritates me. The meter already has an auto turnoff function if you leave it on unattended. Surely the backlight could just stay on until that timeout kicks in.

I've also found it doesn't autorange correctly when using the min/max mode. For example, if you leave the leads disconnected, it autoranges to mV. Press min/max and connect a 9V battery, and all you get is a max reading of OL... You have to manually enter the range before entering min/max mode. Am I correct in assuming the better meters don't act this way?

(Most?) Flukes behave similarly. Autoranging is disabled in Min/Max modes.

Similarly to Frequency, Duty Cycle, and Pulse Width measurement, you can also set the multimeter to the correct AC/DC mode, connect the test leads to the signal you are measuring and then switch to the Min/Max, Hz or whatever. The multimeter will start in the correct range. You can of course change the range manually.

Cheers,
Dan

Backlights tend to draw an order of magnitude more current than the rest of the meter, hence the more aggressive time out on most battery-powered meters, I'm not familiar with the CEM. Auto-ranging wouldn't work well with min/max. The range switching would be too slow to capture the peaks.

The backlight timeout on most meters irritates me.

Yes I have the same feelings.
I like to have full control on it.
The Brymen BM869 it can do just about 16 seconds, and there is no override function.
The Fluke 28II does have an override function (disables the timer) , and  the paradise of multimeters about the backlight control are the Agilent U1272A.
Programmable timer, plus you can disable it permanently if you like so.   :)

Who is Martin Lorton?

He is a man that I would love to travel to Africa, just to shake hands with him.  :)

Martin's last report... The selector switch on the MT1887 broke during a simple rotation.....
