Title: Q: Electronics engineering job Zurich, CH
Post by: Warhawk on February 22, 2015, 09:59:53 am
Hello fellow engineers and hobbyists,
Does anyone have experience with an electronics engineering job in Switzerland who would share it ? I've got an offer for a job in Zurych which I am still considering because it seems that it exactly fits to me. Gross salary is 102k CHF /year which would sound terrific in any other part of the world. However, Switzerland is the country where gas is cheaper than bottled water and cost of living in Zurich is breathtaking.  :phew: Above that the contract is through external company.
I am not asking for a help with my decision, just for experience and opinion. Are there some drawbacks I should be aware of ? What about social aspects, how the Swiss get along with ausländers  ?

All input welcome, please avoid politics  ;)

Thanks !

One of the things to consider is your working permit.
I recall that there is a law that states that after 9 months of labor, you have to leave the country for 3 months? Or something like that.

As the EU citizen I should not have a problem.

thanks for pointing it out.

Too bad it's not Geneva, because if you like to play outdoors you'd be within two hours drive of Alps Candyland.  :-+

The Swiss like to control things down to the most minute detail. So, expect to be told when you can use your washing machine or any other noisy device and don't expect to do ANYTHING on a Sunday because almost all places close Saturday lunch time and don't reopen until Monday morning.

Monthly cost of health insurance is very high so please don't forget to factor this into your salary.

The good news? An amazing transport system that works like clockwork and chocolate and cake shops to die for  :)

Have fun!

Easy solution: Work in Zurich, live in Germany. Short commute and a bierstube close to home.

Interesting. I thought that I am the only one who has this compulsive disorder  :-DD.
And yes, health insurance is something I already know about. That brings me back to the idea if 102k SWK is enough.  I am more than happy with my premium job in Prague, but living abroad (again) for a while might be a nice career booster and life experience, especially for a young dude without a family and with screw you money (http://www.eevblog.com/2011/01/08/eevblog-138-top-5-tips-for-graduate-engineers/).

Well, that is not a bad idea at all. I need to improve my German anyway.  :)

That makes a lot of sense. Life is cheap in Germany. When I need to stay somewhere close to the German border I pick a hotel in Germany. Restaurants in Germany are also 50% cheaper compared to the rest of Europe.

Compared to the rest of western Europe  ;)

Wouldn't have minded to pay a little more if the damn measurement equipment was a little cheaper in Germany!
For what it's worth, prices do go up when you move to bigger cities there (thinking of Hamburg) but food and clothing are still pretty affordable.
