Adhesive tapes - what to use for what?
« on: December 08, 2017, 04:18:11 am »
This question might be too broad, but would you be able to mention the names and purpose of some tapes in electronics, or do you perhaps know a list of such tapes somewhere?

For example, there is the electronics insulation tape made from PVC (which is not very recommended here I believe), there is some Mylar tape advertised for use in transformers (supposedly high temperature resistant), there is of course the Kapton tape. There are different types of double sided tapes.

The last two I haven't even heard of before this forum and YouTube videos from electronics channels. There might be many more useful gems out there which I simply do not know about, but would like to.

Mylar or polyester tape is cheap and tough.  Kapton tape is even tougher and works to high temperatures but is much more expensive.

To cite the wise words of a colleague: "Whenever in doubt, kaptonize!"

There is also a thicker blue polyester tape used as low cost replacement for Kapton made of polyester which is thicker than the thin yellow polyester/Mylar tape used for transformer insulation and more flexible than Kapton.
