Quality breadboards on eBay
« on: April 13, 2017, 08:33:26 pm »
I was looking for a couple of quality breadboards and ordered a couple of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/191994779221
They appear to have gold plated contact strips and make very firm connections.  However the outer paired rails are spaced a little further from center than the usual Arduino compatible breadboards which was not a problem for my application.

A little different concept but is good quality

It's a mix of Lego and breadboard, you can make the sockets where you want

That seller also has them still in the box.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/200668490915

It's been on my watch list for a while and looks like the genuine 3M item, but I don't think they're gold-plated. I've got several 3M breadboards in the 300 series and none of those are gold-plated.

I have a couple of very old Radio Shack #276-169 Universal Breadboards (with the heavy metal base) needing that part replaced and these are the exact same size, if not actually the same part used by Radio Shack.

The ones in the box show the part number on them that is not the part number for the gold plated ones.  I took a chance on the unboxed ones and they sure appear to have gold plated contact strips.  They are definitely old stock; the double stick foam backing doesn't want to peel off the board to get the connector strips out, but when removed are bright shiny gold.
I just posted this find in case anyone really wanted to find some quality breadboards instead of the usual crap-shoot ones commonly available.

I use those:
https://www.dfrobot.com/product-126.html

They are fine -  the power rails are not connected all the way, they are pure white (I prefer the ones with red and black strip on the power rails).
The contacts line up perfect and I can fit TO-220 or random wires easily, not the most tight breadboard but good enough.
3M are probably the best breadboard out there, but they are too expensive because of the shipping. (10$ breadboard 25$ shipping.. nope).

Looking into the holes on a 3M board I have, if the light is at the right angle I can see that the contacts are not silver colored but more of a golden copper color. If it they had gone to the expense of gold plating, it seems they would have at least mentioned that. I am certainly no expert so this is just a guess, but it may be some type of phosphor bronze alloy.

If the unboxed boards from that seller are gold plated, then the price is a steal. Even if not, and they are just the standard 3M board, it's a good enough deal that I will probably order at least one, and maybe one of the boxed versions too, just to compare.
