Questions about Adelaide Australia
« on: April 22, 2024, 09:46:03 pm »
Looks like I'll be visiting Adelaide for a couple of weeks, with a possible follow-on trip in the future. Three questions, quasi-electronics related...

(1a) Are there any electronics or computer hacker groups that have meetups?
(1b) Any forum members in Adelaide?

(2) Any brick-and-mortar electronics store(s) in Adelaide? If not, what is the local go-to app for quick, next-day delivery? No matter how hard you try to plan ahead, experience taught me to have a plan B in case you inevitably forgot something.

(3) I really like learning about the history of technology, electronics, computers, etc. Are there any such museums nearby? Hardly nearby, but of course there is the Canberra deep space tracking station. If I got myself in the vicinity, do they have a museum (one might argue the whole place is itself a living museum)?

I hope you enjoy your time here (I'm from Adelaide)

Not 100% sure about groups, I think there are but their names are escaping me. My only involvement with a group is with a local repair cafe. Have a google for "Maker" groups in Adelaide perhaps.

Brick and Mortar stores:
Altronics, about 10min drive north of the city centre, are my go to shop.
Aztronics, in the city centre, they're a little independant shop I've only been there a few times.
Jaycar, they do carry components, enclosures, etc but I prefer Altronics. They have a bunch of stores in Adelaide including in the city centre

Overnight delivery is hit and miss in Adelaide, options include Element14 (also known as Farnell) and RS Comonents. I also use WES however you'd need to open an account first so they may not be an option for a short term visitor.

Thanks! All good information.  I’m looking forward to the visit, and if the job pans out, maybe a few more to come.

I've been pondering things for you to do, we don't really have a science and technology museum here, despite being quite a technical city.

We have Codan making radios, Redarc doing DC power equipment, and many other global defense brands present doing all sorts of stuff that would be interesting if we could actually hear about it.

There is however a temporary museum display happening of radio equipment, much of it brands that were manufactured here in Adelaide.

This display moves around, I'm not sure when you're visiting but hopefully it will be available somewhere to view when you're here.

Definitely put aside a day to explore the various institutions along North Terrace in the city. Well worth having a look at our museum, art gallery, and state library, all of which are free to enter.

If you like good food and wine then you're in the place for that, Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale are all within an hour of the city center and have world class offerings.
