There's only one thing MORE utterly idiotic and wasteful than taking movies too seriously, and obsessing over them, and that's starting internet "discussions" about them.

It's fiction. It's entertainment. It's like eating a chocolate bar - go and buy one, eat it, then move on. No one gives a shit, and if they do, well...  :palm:
Except the chocolate bar INC made 1 billion USD in a week, and buys ALL the other companies who sell chocolate bar. The only one you can get has bullshit in it. And you really want the chocolate bar with the cranberry, but someone thinks that the bullshit bar is better for you.

Hey it's holiday chill time (at 40C.. :o) so I'll bite  ;)

No one here afaik is taking anything too seriously,
one does not have to be a hard core Star Wars fan kitted out in Stormtrooper or Darth rigs to enjoy the movie

internet 'discussions' here about sci-fi shows got me hooked up with great shows I was not aware of from members here, and vice versa

and who wants to blow cash on the latest (turkey alert   :-//)  franchise movie,

when with a tip off, it can wait at the back of the 'well, I suppose I better watch it and say I did..and move on..'  queue

FYI: internet 'discussions' here about electronics are not too shabby either

Hey, I hope I'm not feeding any LLort here  :scared:

You have to have seen the original "back in the day" to appreciate how original and innovative it actually was.
I've always been an eager SF devourer, and, after more than 50 years, still am.

I remember going to see the original Star Wars (I think that's what's called now "Ep. IV, A new hope") when it came out in '77, with my father, another SF aficionado.

I really had great expectations.

My disappointment was so bitter I've never again touched the saga to this day. :--

Having watched it after Solaris and 2001, I really cannot see how it can be considered original and innovative.
SFX might have been good, for the time - I did not care, that was never SF, more like a western with spaceships. :blah:

I'msad to say that the best thing to happen to Star Wars
since the original 3 episodes was Spaceballs...,
Spaceballs is a masterpiece. We still watch it every now and then, and enjoy it as the first time.

Looking at Lucas's writing/directing history, I see that I might have a problem with him.
The only thing I like in the list is THX1138 - don't get me started on IJ...

I saw the UK cinema trailers for the original Star Wars, and it looked liked a really bad Solaris or 2001. I didn't watch it. Several years later I saw it when it reached TV, and realised the problem was just that the marketing was braindead. The actual movie was just fun hockum, are worked quite well at that level.

Masterpiece might be an exaggeration. Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are masterpieces, Spaceballs is really good.

I suspect Goerge Lucas is another Ridley Scott - someone who sometimes made excellent films because they were lucky enough to work with some very talented people on those occasions.

"Disney allegedly sabotaged Abrams and edited the film behind his back, making it even worse in the process."

Just watched this with the family.  Some observations.

1.  Theaters in the US have converted to reclining lounge seats and assigned seating to attempt to fight the move to watching at home.  This, combined with better janitorial work has made the movie experience much more pleasant.  Even though I have a very large screen TV and good sound system there is still a distinct different and I believe positive experience in a theater.

2.  This film will never win any awards for thoughtfulness, plot development or any of that.  The story bounces around and even for a sci-fi flick doesn't have any respect for laws of physics or any other laws.  Without giving anything away it is really, really hard to imagine an interstellar civilization that mixes animal labor for pack animals with interstellar flight.

3.  Given all that there are some stunning graphics, lots of action and enough variety in aliens to provide some reality.  Not all of them have two arms, two legs, a head on top with two eyes above a nose which is above a mouth.

I enjoyed it, but wouldn't place it very high on my all time list of favorites and I wouldn't recommend it for someone who didn't have somewhat of a soft spot for the Star Wars series.  Movies like Forbidden Planet and Dune are far, far better.

all right mate. Calm down it's Christmas.

You forgot to add the passive-aggressive, permanently disgruntled Brit emoji. 😂
