Thinking about buying another scope!
« on: November 18, 2011, 03:22:54 am »
I have a Tek 2225 but have the opportunity to pick up an excellent 2245A for about $200. Should I do it? I'm retired now but still hobby about with things. Can you have too many scopes?  :-\

The 2245A is nicer scope, with cursors and readout, and 4 channels might come in handy. 100MHz isn't a huge increase in bandwidth though. So the only consideration would be if it's better value to try and find a higher bandwidth version for the $$$ ?
$200 is a decent enough price for it though.

Dave.

But you can run out of storage space. And this brings the question, what do you do with all that gear after reviews Dave? I guess some of it is returned to manufacturers and some of it can be seen in the lab. But what about the rest, are you just storing it for any possible future use? Just a question purely out of the curiosity, I hope it'll kill the cat and not me.

Thanks for the thoughts all. Still undecided. I may save up for a DSO instead or a higher bandwidth scope (although the 2245A is double the bandwidth of the 2225). The cost of a 200 or 300MHz scope seems a bit outrageous however. Most 100M scopes are not that far off in price to 50M ones but as soon as you climb into the rarified atmosphere of 150+ the price begins to shoot. Plenty to think about.

But you can run out of storage space.

If you run out of bench space because of alot of equipment only solution is to get bigger bench

Or you can use the test equipment as a bench.
One can never have enough oscilloscopes.

The stuff I like (and am allowed to keep) makes it onto my bench, the other stuff I get to keep gets either stored or eventually sold on ebay or sometimes given away. If it's "potentially useful" and I don't have an equivalent tool already, then I usually like to keep it.
With the new 50sqm lab, storage space won't be an issue any more  ;D
Sometime if the wife finds out what some stuff is worth, she makes me sell it to pay the bills :-(
And this has been going on long before the blog when I used to acquire gear from various places.
And some stuff I have to return of course.

Dave.

Curious how a scope which can be a means to further income, is seen a $1000 which must be turned into patio furniture and yet 3 or 4 pairs of seldom worn shoes to similar value are regarded as essentials.

Diminishing returns after your first scope, let alone your 5th or 6th, whereas a happy wife repays endlessly.  ;D

How much can you get for a one? And can't you only sell them once?

Well, I've just gone and done it.  :o

2245A on the way. I got an original Tek P6131 thrown in as well so that makes the deal a bit sweeter. I'm hoping this thing is an order of magnitude less complex than a 2465 as I would hate to repair it after seeing that teardown.

Remember that an old Tek scope is a priceless classic and they don't make them like that any more. On old wife on the other hand.....

Hahahaha.

Anywho, that's a pretty sweet deal for both scopes. I ended up getting a Rigol tonight after looking around a few hours. Hopefully they don't still have that screen flicker issue  :'(

I thought I'd wait for a DSO until I need one. Prices are dropping and features/bandwidths are rising so hopefully when I do need one I can get a 100+MHz/2Gs scope for the price of a 50/1. There don't seem to be many secondhand units available yet so that would help the prices come down eventually as well. With the 2245A I should be good to about 150MHz for most things.
