which forum software

I will possibly be setting up a forum for my local area, which forum software would be recomended, this one (simple machines) seems good, can it be fresh installed ? I don't think my host has many forum options but i think most can be uploaded and installed can't they ? (I have done it before). I am not really in the mood for another spell with phpBB as i used it before and frankly it was a maze and a mess to administer.

If your host is Cpanel based and they have an icon for Fantastico, then it probably has SMF under discussion boards.

If so, install just takes settings seconds.

If not, Simple Machines is designed to use minimum server resources, so you should be able to manually install it without needing help from the hosting company.

I upgraded my forum from phpbb to vbulletin a few years ago and haven't looked back.

Most, if not all, only require adding a database, editing the config file to suit and uploading

Simon,  last year I copied my smf folder straight to my server's (even though they had cpanel and smf ). Then, I recalled, clicking on an installation file and it configured everything. After that I deleted the installation file. That was it.

That said, I love those more expensive forums
