High speed signal integrity
« on: January 11, 2013, 11:42:10 pm »
Hi all

I'm looking to buy Dr Howard Johnson's 2 books
High Speed Signal Propagation
and
High Speed Digital Designs

I want to get up to speed with the practicle aspects of high speed PCB design and was wondering whether these books fit the bill or are they extremely theoritcial in nature.
If so any other suggestions

Dr. Johnson also runs a website with a lot of good info
http://www.sigcon.com/Pubs/pubsChron.htm

Here are a bunch of links to start with, there is a lot of info out there. I'm not very good at laying out lots of complex info. There are others on here who are much better at it.
http://www.analog.com/static/imported-files/tutorials/MT-101.pdf
http://www.vagrearg.org/content/decoupling
http://www.rickmiller.com/si.htm
http://www.analog.com/library/analogDialogue/archives/39-09/layout.pdf
http://www.signalintegrity.com/Pubs/straight/probes.htm
http://www.maximintegrated.com/app-notes/index.mvp/id/5527
http://www.altera.com/literature/an/an114.pdf

Appnotes are a great source of concise info.

Advice out there ranges from "throw on more decoupling" which isn't patently wrong but if you keep digging you will find quantatative answers, like "pick several several values of decoupling caps with self-resonant frequencies centered around your device's operating frequency"

I have only read Johnson's earlier book, although it can get theoretical he usually breaks down the concepts into immediately usable rules of thumb.

Thanks a lot for the info, I'll push it to the tablet for later reading.

I still want to purchase some books on the subject, most of the stuff that I have read and learnt that's stayed in my head seems to have come from books. Maybe its because I have to physically get up, reach for the book from a shelf and turn pages. Whilst wiggling my wrist, flexing my index finger and then reading from a screen that I have been labouring over for hours seems to have a detrimental effect on my memory retention.
There seems to be something about books that makes them, I don't know, more tangible?

Nevertheless I understand what you mean by the concise nature of appnotes and their importance

I also found this one on amazon thats had 2 reviews, both of them good.
Unfortunately for me in the preview available in his first sentence he calls them PWB's, I immediately think he's a dickhead and a large protion of my brain festers on that point making it difficult to digest any info, regardless of how valuble it is... Arghh, I have so many problems  |O

After the podcast that Dave made with Dr Howard Johnson's those two books are really on my wish list, both of them cost almost 250€ when accounting for shipping and customs, but after all I have read in the internets I really got the impression that they are really good books, someone here can make a review?

Yeah that's what i was hoping for.
I imagine they would give you a greater understanding of issues encountered but do they also help you on a practical level, like design techniques, rules of thumb etc...
