Rigol scope (1052E?) makes an appearance in 'Gravity'
« on: March 08, 2014, 09:07:36 pm »
I caught this watching the extras and thought I would share it.
Even though the scope doesn't seem to appear in the actual movie, I thought it was cool it made it to the bluray. It appears to be a 1052E. Good enough for astronauts I suppose.

The fire extinguisher makes me think its an add in prop, (it has a mount but not screwed to the wall!)

then again i dont have the bluray so i have to wonder what kind of tone they where setting where a fire extinguisher and an oscilloscope?

If it was a prop, would they bother hooking up leads to the scope? I doubt they would have any idea what to do with them...

Good screencap. He's both an EE PhD and an MD.

Several books on the shelf are popular medicine texts I know them well as I have the same.  Its clearly a 1052e as I saw on a zoom in of the screen cap.  The extinguisher is a good idea to have in your lab if you work in power electronics versus a risk of fire, so I don't think its a prop, more like his bench/office.
Best Wishes,

Master of Arts degree in electrical engineering??
Doctor of Philosophy degree in electrical engineering??

What's next? Master of motor crossing degree in cake baking??

I'm wondering if it is hacked to 100MHz bandwidth.

It says he got a BSc EE in 1975, then an MEng  and an MA. Here, doing an MEng disqualifies you from an MSc as it's basically the nonresearch variant and typically a terminal degree as it's mostly course-based but then again, I've never heard of an MA in EE or a dual discipline masters or doctorate.

I bet Evel Knievel would have baked a mean Grand Canyon Jumping Strawberry Cake for his dissertation.

yes.

the more wires they can have sticking out of it the more specialized it will appear to the common person watching. wouldnt be surprised if they just stated gluing extra probes to the buttons for a prop.

However, given the fact that he is an EE, it's perfectly believable that he would want a cheap scope sitting around on a secondary office. Probably feels naked without one. Maybe he got the 1052 because this is a relatively insecure office in a university campus, he paid for it with his own money and knows of some past thefts. Plus, being an astronaut, he doesn't need fancy props to boost his tech cred to the audience.

Unlike Robert Downey, who needs every kind of technical-looking instrument that he would have no clue how to turn on in order to boost his geek cred and be more believable to the audience as some sort of tech genius. :-DD

Doctor of Philosophy degree in electrical engineering??

Well, that's what it's called. It's quite literally a doctor degree in the love of knowledge (wisdom), rather than the field philosophy but I'm sure you knew that.
In Finland people would rather use the term Ph.D. than Dr. since the term doctor makes you sound like you're an MD.

I bet there could be a heated discussion about why it's called Master of Science in Engineering (is it engineering or is it science? ;P) if you wanted.

4Minute - Why  (kpop)

Very rare - a prop oscilloscope, that actually gets touched. Too bad it doesn't appear to be switched on.

I guess that makes it a k-prop.

No, never heard that kind of combination of terms. They both still sound very strange to me.
