Nah  ARM is not up for grabs. that would be a disaster for the ecosystem.

I will of course bow to your insight on this. But at the least I doubt they'll still be based in Cambridge, or anywhere in Europe for that matter, 5 years down the line.

I would also add Intel to On the Hunt and Qualcomm (chip business) to Potential Takeover Targets.

I would've thought it was the other way around.  Fairchild doesn't seem to be doing too badly, to me.  I haven't bought hardly anything from On Semi in the last forever.  Probably a good combination though; Fairchild seems to rock with discretes, which I've hardly seen any from On Semi (aside from the old standbys like 2N3904s and MJE*'s).  For what I know of their discrete and IC portfolios, it should be a good combination, though it'll probably lead to the obsolescence of some redundant parts.

Here is a twist to the merger gambit. Toshiba to auction off all its chip business except for NAND flash.

Recall that Toshiba is now the number 8 semiconductor supplier in the world and just a couple of years ago in the top 5.

The semi conductor industry is going through a sea change right now. I was in China in December 2015 and met with quite a few Chinese fab-less IC shops. I think the Japanese understand exactly what's down the road for them and they are divesting in anticipation of that.

The Chinese is climbing up the value-added chain, doing to the Japanese what the Japanese did to the US.
