Rossman: detailed onewheel repair interview
« on: April 02, 2022, 07:11:52 am »
"Introducing Onewheel repair wizard, Josh Haley from Fiction Factory Boardworks"

Incredibly long and detailed interview with Onewheel repair expert.
Lots of interesting design notes, failure modes, etc.

Interesting failures:
- Unglued ferrite bounces around and can pull connector from board
- Nut holding power button in place comes loose and smacks into bluetooth module
- Board rubs up against the enclosure, wearing down the traces

Some of the various design progressions:
- Locking out external battery packs from being used
- Changing the tire size slightly so you can't use an off the shelf go-cart tire
- Changing charge connector to non-standard smaller type, that can burn out
- Changing the motor phase connector, to a smaller one, that can burn out
- Serializing the BMS and motor controller so neither can be swapped out
- Encrypting the BMS communication

Their warranty:
Quote
The COMPANY warrants that the PRODUCT, other than the footpad, tire and battery pack, will be free from defects in materials and worksmanship for a period of 12 months / 2000 KM (1243 miles), whichever comes first. The warranty for the footpad, tire and battery pack is 6 months / 1000 KM (622 miles).
