Just saw it today. Pretty funny and probably wouldn't go well with audience outside of the US.

In our spare time, we put 12 men on the Moon. How's the rest of the world coming along?
I like the commercial!

Pretty good advert! :-+
I don't see how any of that relates to a smartphone though... :-//

It doesn't... most advertisement today is trying to create an emotional connection. Why bore the audience with technical specifications, features, etc? They took a page right out of Apple's marketing book... They have never been about specs/features... Always selling an emotion/feeling. That's most ads for you.
Check this one out and tell me what it has to do with an iPhone (other than it shoots 4K which Samsung has had for some time already):

First morning of marketing 101: Appeal to patriotic pride.
It's interesting that it still works at a time when everyone's supposed to be a media savvy cynic.
-

are you implying that the customer cares or bothers to know what the magic number means?
trying to sell a product with ephasis on the specs is a technique that died long long time ago
yeah the more useless the number is the more is likely that he fall for it but still, there are so many products with big numbers, let's stand out in some other way

"How's the rest of the world coming along?"
The Europeans invented democracy, hundreds of years of enlightenment (though that seems to have done little for most Europeans), world wars (not one but TWO and possibly three), Nazis, Holocaust, concentration camps, the iron curtain (if you count the Russians), communism, socialed medicine.
I'm sure I missed quite a few important innovations.

The rest of the world is doing fine thanks. Have you travelled to any other countries? If not, perhaps you should.
The Europeans invented everything required for the foundation of the modern USA. Without it the US would be a collection of third world countries, continuously fighting one another to this very day.
Unfortunately the same technology invented in Europe made genocide on an industrial scale also possible.

Personally, I haven't traveled a great deal. I was involved with the Amdahl project in Ireland, I was stationed in Germany back in the mid '60s, I lived in Singapore while I was involved with building a semiconductor plant. I made 13 trips to Malaysia (diving off the various islands), made a short trip to the Maldives and spent a week on a sailboat off of Phuket, Thailand. Not counting trips to Tijuana in my youth...
My comment had only to do with technology, not politics. My personal opinion is that the Apollo missions are the most technically significant achievements of all time. Nothing before or since remotely compares. I was working in a machine shop that built small sub-assemblies for the space program and you could just feel the energy flowing from NASA. Lots of jobs at all levels, engineers, technicians, machinists; it was a huge program. Alas, we have done nothing since... No, I don't consider the ISS to be anywhere near comparable.

That wasn't really aimed at you but Danny. . .
I wasn't meaning to be political. It's easy to forget that today's technology is based on that of our ancestors. In the case of the US it was the Europeans but before then, other civilisations such as the Chinese and Egyptians set the foundation for Europe.
I agree the Apollo missions were a significant achievement but I'd also say Concorde was too because it made stratospheric supersonic travel the norm.

Seems we Americans can do almost anything... except manufacture our own phones.

"except manufacture our own phones."
You can but you elected not to. Big difference.

I thought so too. But one of the enlightened Europeans said that today's Europeans shouldn't thank America for saying them because that was so yesteryear.
Do you happen to recall who said that?
:)

*palm* well it didn't take long for an american to start boasting now did it? lol
First morning of marketing 101: Appeal to patriotic pride.
No kidding, Americans seem to be especially gullible for that tactic. Stick a flag on anything and all of a sudden it's "patriotic"

What is that with the provincials? Don't they have manners?

The US set a great example by killing off the indigenous people and start to fight among themselves.

The US set a great example by killing off the indigenous people....
exaggerating again we are?
The are millions of local native people in the US.
... start to fight among themselves.
Well, remember, they were mostly Europeans, but for the most part, the new world taught the Europeans immigrants that they can live together and leave behind them their historic mutual hate. It's very encouraging to see that this spirit of peaceful coexistent spread recently also to Europe itself.

I wouldn't call going 12 million to less than 0.25 million Indians an exaggeration.

So, what's up with NASA these days anyway? At their current incredibly rapid pace of development, if Apollo was started tomorrow we wouldn't get to the Moon until next century.

I think you misunderstood NASA's mission. Their primary objective, according to the new administration, isn't about space exploration. It has something to do with spreading some religion in some far away land.
Basically, NASA's mission is being missionary.

Yes, exaggeration.
1. Check the definition of 'kill off'
2. Check your numbers, for example

Based on captured Nazi death rocket technology....
Why didn't the french, the italian, the turks, or the greek etc. capture the same nazi technology?
Plus, isn't it cool that the nazi death rocket technology is made to benefit everyone including you?

Yep, we turned it into peace time technology and resuscitated that scientists. That's noble.
