For those from other countries, in Australia it's generally considered rude to talk about who you will/should vote for and celebrity endorsements are almost unheard of, but politicians are well and truly fair game for being laughed at and the butt of jokes.

I like him, he shut down all Electronics R&D and manufacturing and continued the dumbing down of education.
Leaving the country without Electronics specialists. Now there is only untrained capacitor changers available to employers.

Makes it dead easy for me to continually move around between jobs of my current choice, at the pay I ask for.

If it were built properly, we wouldn't have these issues. Fibre connections don't need solder joints.

In fairness to Scotty, the "dumbing down" thing was well under way before his time.

Govts from both sides got suckered into the "ask Industry what they want"slogan.

This might have worked when Industries were run by old scary buggers who knew what their company did, & had the solder burn scars to prove it, but in the modern era, the Boss is a non-technical MBA, with a deep suspicion of "technical types", who just reads the specification for a job, without any deeper understanding.

The result is a lot of "monkey see, monkey do" minimally trained drones.

I too was pondering how the solder smoke was not trailing into his face? Is he so negatively charged that not even smoke particles can approach?

Observing the thermal mass of that choke, it would have required more than a few seconds/minutes/days to heat the pad to melting point with such a weedy tip. Maybe the spin doctors wanted to avoid metaphors about holding a smoking hot iron? Even so, it's nice to see the political class learning shop skills 101. Just in case they need to work for a real slave wage.

I must say, that photo-op is rather reminiscent of an article illustration from a vintage 70's electronics magazine. The one where 'dad' and 'son' assemble a model railroad speed controller, whilst mum looks on adoringly.

Now they  make certain to turn off the power before he touches anything.

Tony Abbott not long ago boasted he didn't know how to use a laptop computer. Helen Coonan (once the Minister for Telecommunications) clearly did not know what bandwidth was. This bloke Morrison wouldn't know one end of a screw driver to the other, let alone a soldering iron.

They are best left to what they are skilled at... spin and  .

Most "computer" people don't know what bandwidth means either----they have stolen a perfectly good technical term & used it to mean something completely different.

Bandwidth means, & always will, occupied frequency spectra of a signal, channel or device.
See--when they steal the term "bandwidth", it makes a simple definition into a linguistic monstrosity!!

The word "gay" was stolen by a minority and made mainstream. So was the word "hacker" hijacked - by the non-technical media.  I am a hacker. Been one for over 45 years. Still doing hacking. Cops should be here any minute now. As the brilliant David Astle will say, the English language is fluid.

But I see your point on bandwidth. More precise terms are data rate, baud rate or throughput. Coonan said on two separate occasions on the ABC TV, something very much like  "City people get 10 megabits and country people get one megabit." The average 12 year old knows more about technology than she did. Proof that she was technically clueless. Too many lawyers and no engineers in parliament.

I saw that workshop on youtube.
Its also the one where a Kim Jung-un impersonator attended the media event.



To me it clearly shows how the Australian electronics industry is. I think this is all he could find that looked high tech, but isn't.
Not even any fake CRO pictures any more only soldering tools.
All the work benches shown where assembly stations only, no test gear no technology. That's all that is waiting for the current generation of electronics people.

This is the real state of electronics in Australia, as shown on that tube, assemblers and non academically trained "capacitor changers", as I call them.

He was also in the media for having accidentally crash tackled a ten year old kid at an underage football match, another photo opportunity with non voters.
After having been very effectively blasted by a pensioner in front of the media, now these stunts are his way only of hiding from the public.

Yes, you are right, but it is fairly common in recent times for ex-PMs to "pull the plug" after a "decent interval".
I assumed he would do the same, but as you point out, if his electorate is happy with him, so why not stay?
