Self publishing
« on: April 21, 2020, 10:39:12 pm »
Hello All,

I am curious to know if any board member self publishes (EDN, EETimes, Nuts and Volts, Circuit Cellar) etc.

I am in a position where the ideal would be publishing *Current Employer* App Notes, but projects and resources have always been a roadblock; i.e., never enough time.

I guess one could argue to write application notes on personal time, but self publishing ideas, circuits, test methodologies, have come to mind as well.

Has anyone done this consistently? If so,
  • What do you write about?
  • Who do you publish to?
  • What format do you use (WORD, LaTex, Framemaker)
  • How difficult is it for a publisher to accept your article?

I have published *very* minor things a few times into a local electronics magazine ( http://www.aradio.cz/ ) and once into Circuit Cellar ( specifically my resistance measurement method: https://www.daqq.eu/?p=1333 ).

If you have an interesting thought, expand upon in and write down the results. I think you are going at it from the wrong end - don't try to make a device that will make for a good read, make a good device, then write about it. It's more fun.

I used Word, mostly because they wanted it that way. Various outlets will have various requirements, but I'm sure that they can be negotiated with.

It was pretty easy for my texts, since most of them were filler and the other one was a fairly complex text. There's nothing like a peer review process in hobbyist magazines.
Believe it or not, pointy haired people do exist!

Perhaps another option is to start a blog. I know the benefit of submitting articles 1) gets one exposure and 2) can bring in a little $$.

Maybe both options are available. I will have to think about it.

I have some home projects that I have been sitting on, so maybe that is a good resource to pull from.

A well-referenced blog will probably get you more exposure in the end than an occasional article on Circuit Cellar IMO.

Now if you manage to get published in a peer-reviewed journal, that's another story as far as exposure goes, but that doesn't seem to be what you were after.

+1 for a blog/website

You will find that as the blog/website grows it becomes an archive of knowledge that is always easy to reference for future projects
