« on: December 21, 2015, 09:28:22 pm »
Have you guys ever had to sell your electronic equipment to pay your bills  ???The reason I ask cause I got a deal of a lifetime with a  Rigol DS1054Z..It was great to use and help out alot for me learning electronics.. Well I came up short on rent and my new scope had to go in order to keep my place .. Then today working with my function generator my cheap 20mhz analog scope died  and is not worth fixing.. So now I have no scope and totally regretting selling my Rigol..

Yes.
19 years ago, we had to pawn/sell my wife's acoustic guitar and other stuff for rent and groceries.
We're so poor, that for Christmas 1997, my wife and I bought a McDonald's happy meal so we can get the included free toy, for our 3-month old baby's 1st Christmas gift.

Well, may be he is in an area where jobs are not readily available.  The economy has not been good.  Gone are the days where all you need is just the will to work.

Yes I am. And because we were occupied by f***in soviets, after gaining independence, we were raised with a mentality to stand up and get our lives better instead of crying out to someone else.
So 4 years ago, when I understood that my job pays me to cover my bills and food only - I found a job that pays more, but had to move from Lithuania to Ireland. Then from Ireland to the US.

The meaning behind my post was that the guy has some knowledge in electronics and apparently he is wasting that. He could probably be an engineer and get paid proper money to be happy. If not R&D, he could probably do validation or so. There are companies that can hardly find any engineers at all.

P.S. The former alcoholism is still related to people raised within soviet union. New generation already came in.

@Scrts, another Easterner here ...

You don't know squat about why the OP is in difficulty but you have immediately made an assumption that he is simply lazy and not looking for a "proper job". How do you know that? Perhaps he is in difficulty because he has to take care of a sick family member (and medical bills in the US can ruin you unless you are lucky and have good insurance - many don't). Perhaps he has legal problems (a messy divorce could break a bank too!) or because of any other of the many possible reasons - which are ultimately none of our business. He is not begging for money or your help - he is offering to sell his scope to help himself out of the difficult situation he is in, doing exactly what you are reproaching him for not doing.

That you have managed to emigrate to Ireland then to US - great for you, many don't have that option. It is easy to lecture others from a position of privilege.

Don't judge others unless you want to be judged yourself. A bit of empathy didn't kill anyone yet.

Happy New Year,

Jan

I was not targeting any privileges. The thing is to turn your life into the other way. If it's going downwards, you have to do something to change the direction instead of selling something out, then next month think of what to sell again... I believe in OP. It's probably just bad period of time in addition to all Christmas & NY feelings, which probably makes it more depressing and this is the most difficult time to do major changes, but better now, not later.

If I would be in this position, I would turn to my friends or relatives and ask for help. Other than that, selling unused stuff is also a good option, but seems like it's not the case.
