Dave, with all due respect, in 25 years of being online, I have never seen a site so prone to repeated outages.
Time to get a new host?

The GearSlutz forum is far and away worse than this one.
GS is chronically and painfully slow, and regularly goes wacko where it will take forever to submit a post, and then it will repeat it 2-3 times.
It seems clear they are trying to serve the entire planet from their little server box in Ascot.
At least Dave is using Cloudflare for proper global coverage.

Most of the issues I've have had could have happened with any host.
You are making it out to be worse than it really is.
How many hours a day do you spend here? Every day? It's probably why you notice it more.
-
The server got splashed by a gravitational wave and the electrons got soggy. Dave's now borrowed a hair drier from SWMBO and we're back in action.

No worries - I'm sure there are other sites that are worse.
But FWIW - this is not the only forum I have visited daily over the years and while I currently probably visit here more regularly than other forums, I do still visit other forums several times a week.
None of the other forums I have experience with have had anywhere near the frequency of outages yours does. Maybe I've been lucky.
But you can't help us EEVBlog addicts from wanting uninterrupted service can you! It's just too much fun here. I'll keep coming back even if the outages get worse. ;D

There are more websites I (used to) check daily and so far EEVblog has been the one with the most outages by far in this day & age of the internet.

One forum I visited this morning is having a few issues and declared that they may have to revert to a backup which is a week old, they have also asked that members refrain from posting for the interim period, all thing's considered we have it pretty damn good here.
I'd be screwed without this stuff.... :)

Must have been testing a prototype Batterizer in the power supply....

Strictly for amateurs. The pros use these:

Don't take it personally Dave, no one's having a go at you or your site, mate.
The forum isn't down that often or for that long, but I too have noticed that it does indeed seem to be more frequent than other sites.

Is the database running on the same server as the website software ?
Just seems having two separate servers is pretty much standard for high traffic forums.
Still at least whatever happened was overnight AU time, so it got fixed first thing in the morning and didn't cut too much into your lab time.

Hi
If I don't get my eevBlog fix every few minutes, I go into withdrawal.
I need my fix !!!
===
I've been doing this since the 80's. Even running my own hardware and software, it never was 100%. These days doing it "roll it yourself is a bit crazy". If you track Amazon or Google, they go out on a regular basis. For some reason I suspect that Dave's budget for IT is not quite in the same league as theirs. I *could* be wrong, been wrong before :)

I know. I just think that people remember the outages and attribute more worth to it that actually happens. So I'm trying to explain what's causing these things.
For example, a lot (majority?) of the outages had to do with various issues related to the technical setup of the server, software-side that is. Trying to tweak it for best performance etc over a year or two as random or rare issues crop up. This would have happened with any host.
But now if I switched hosts now, either
a) those issues could start all over again
or
b) not happen again because they have been sorted out already.
if it's b) then bingo, people will think it was my host (HostGator) when in fact it wasn't.
The forum isn't down that often or for that long, but I too have noticed that it does indeed seem to be more frequent than other sites.
Perhaps, but it's not a big deal. If you actually looked at the uptime I'm sure it's in the 99.9x% category. And it's always fast and reliable when it is up.

Yes, same server. No need for two, one can easily handle it all. Processor load is small, database requests are well within capability.

I know I'm not on here 24x7 - but I don't recall having encountered any server problems. At least nothing that caused me any inconvenience.

Hi
Ok, it's time I fessed up. I was the one who was on the server when it went down. It's all my fault. Posting way to may things and doing searches at the same time nuked the SQL server and then the whole thing went down ... all my fault :)
(Actually most of that is true)

Hi
It is true that I was online as things went down. It is also true that I saw a series of SQL errors before the whole thing went down. They sort of came and went. I kept trying go to threads and post. That may not have been very bright.
Did my "humble efforts" kill the beast ... I have absolutely no idea at all.

I wouldn't sweat it.
Servers should be able to handle multiple requests from multiple users, so I don't think your efforts would have overloaded it. Also, I would not expect SQL errors to be a result of your use of the forum facilities. More likely server level issues.
Then again - maybe you have that 'magic touch' ....

Hi
Well, having spent the last 40 years doing this, I *have* been known to kill things. At least this time it was not code I wrote myself running the server side (back then BBS side) of things ....

Yes I noticed that too... New slogan? ;)

It came out of a discussion about Daves EEVBlog "branded" meter....

Blame Dave for the idea, me for the graphic and everyone else for the encouragement.

While we're talking about EEVblog servers...
Can you PLEASE remove the TapaTalk pop-up that pings every time I open the site on IOS + Chrome ?
I check the 'go away' button' but it comes back.
