Shipping: Australia to USA
« on: September 05, 2022, 01:28:10 pm »
I would be interested in hearing successes/failures in shipping fairly large, fragile objects from Australia to East Coast USA.

I'm contemplating buying a set of bicycle wheels (Caden wheels near Sydney) and I'm a bit nervous that they would arrive safely.

They'll be fine as long as the person sending them to you does an excellent job in packing. If you don't trust the sender, tell them to take the wheels to a "Pack and Send" store who will overpack them nicely.

Shipping from Australia to USA is not cheap.

This is the key.

Never used that service, so cannot comment.

Shipping from Australia to anywhere overseas is not cheap - except for Tasmania.  :D

If the seller cannot pack them themselves, then I second to go to Pack and Send, used them many times in the past for various size items.

You could call/email Pack and Send and ask for a quote.

Thanks for the comments.  The seller operates a business making these wheels and ships worldwide, so presumably he knows what he is doing.  Still, it does make me a bit nervous especially having seen some of the local shipping mishaps on several of my test equipment adventures.  I ordered the wheels so I guess I'll find out in a few weeks.

I've shipped everything from fragile electronics to bottles of wine to the USA and provided that they are packed decently, they have all arrived without any issues.

As with any kind of shipping/postal service, I fully expect boxes to be thrown around (literally) and placed under the weight of others, so pack accordingly.

Then just make sure to add the correct amount of insurance to the postage.

Any business relying on shipping - especially to individual customers - will have got the packaging sorted or they will be out of business really soon.

Insurance is good to ease the wallet anxiety - but we all hope for good news.

Last year I returned a digital camera and lens I bought from Amazon US via Australia Post with only the manufacturer's packaging.

I get a lot of packages shipped to NZ and have them forward to me from the country of purchase via a re-shipper. I get to see the package before it is forwarded on to me and will request repacking if needed. It is not the cheapest option but neither is shipping something broken back for a refund.

Yep, packing is key. It's usually a crap shoot as to the packing experience of the seller.
