Unreal, the first single player FPS they did, was - and still is - criminally underrated.  You could take a still frame, or a second of sound from any part of it, and know its Unreal.  Very well designed, with a great story

Agreed, the single-player experience was a sleeper.  The best of the Unreal levels genuinely belong in an art museum.

It's the first game series/engine that got me into modding and coding. I played through my copy of unreal last year running through wine with modern DX11 support and high res textures.

Another unreal engine game from that era was Deus Ex. I've been resisting the urge to do the 1000th playthrough of that.

First multiplayer game I played when I got a second hand computer capable of running it.
(AMD k6 with a Voodoo card).

I remember waking up at 3-4 in the morning because dial-up calls were extremely cheap up until 7.

They pulled them from sale from all digital store fronts quite some time ago.
Their argument was that a remastered version was coming "soon".
That remastered edition was canceled a couple of months after Unreal was pulled. So for quite a while you could not buy any Unreal game at all, except used from Ebay or similar. Which of course only worked for the older parts not requiring activation.

Well, at least they put the oldest stuff online again. But there is still a lot of Unreal missing.

EDIT: I need to test tonight if the links work for me in germany. Unreal Tournament is still on the "Index", meaning it cannot be made available to minors.

I have the CD. I got distracted with other games, so I should load it up again.

That's the computer I built. The Voodoo 3500 came bundled with Unreal. I powered through the entire game in a weekend. I should be ashamed of how much time I wasted on UT, and even Quake 3, but I'm not.

There was a place where you had to swim underwater in the dark to get some key. It took me some time.

Yep, I have the CD's as well. Unreal 1, Unreal 2, UT, UT2003 and UT2004. Those there the golden days of FPS's.
Never liked Q3A though, even though I bought the CD, mistakenly believing it was a single player game.

It could be single player, Deathmatch against computer bots.
