Smart Watch Bluetooth International (U8 Clone?)
« on: October 15, 2016, 02:00:19 am »
Hi folks,

Our office received 8 of these cheap "Smart" watches for attending a seminar. They were free, so I'm not complaining, but I am sure it is a fake of the better (but still crappy) U8. For one, the vibration doesn't work although the menus give options for vibration alerts also.

I'm not sure if Dave did a teardown or not. Apparently the BT notification app is also suspicious as it sends info to some Chinese server constantly.

Given how cheap it is, it would be a wonderful target for some firmware hack that could improve the functions, similar to how Rockbox worked on older iPods and CDHK works on Canon cameras. But given the huge variation I suspect in the hardware of all the fakes it would probably be difficult to pull off.

Anyone else have one of these? I've been using it mainly for Bluetooth headset/speaker and dialer, but the microphone sucks and callers say they hear themselves echo. Also, since I don't trust the phone app and it seems you have to go to some unknown Chinese sites to download it (at least for the fakes) I am not using the extra functionality. I have not bothered plugging it into my computer yet... does it mount as a memory device? Will it let me put any files on there (wallpaper, music) or is it just for charging and firmware updates? Also, since I have no idea what fake I have, I will not risk downloading and flashing it, as I've heard bricking it is likely.

Otherwise, I'll probably give it to my kids once the novelty wears off. It is not waterproof, looks ugly and big black box, back is already ungluing (no screws), won't show the time unless I press side button... pretty much a piece of crap, but if there was some hack kit for it... that would be cool.

I think this looks similar, on eBay only $9:

The "camera" is a remote trigger for phone camera (no camera in watch), and MP3/music is actually just playing music on phone to the watch (as far as I know, no internal memory or SD card slot visible). It even says in this listing that there is no vibration or altimeter so this looks like it. That is cheap indeed! By the way the battery lasted the whole day/night.
