Here is a cool way to charge your customers and clients.

1. Buy one of these devices on Aliexpress or eBay for around $4.00.

I'm not sure about elsewhere, but in the US a Square starter kit us about $10 and comes with the hardware.

Looks very trustworthy! I would totally use that to pay. Oh look, a banknote.

I got one from Paypal for free. Might have been because I signed up for it months before they actually released it in Australia. Works pretty well the couple of times I tried it. You can also just enter people's credit card details in manually on the app.

No less secure than the official bank 'branded' POS equipment you use in any shop.
At the moment you take your 'plastic fantastic' out of your wallet you're fair game.

Lots of stories in the Australian media about card skimming.

http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/romanian-pair-face-atm-skimming-charges-20100805-11hez.html

It doesn't matter what kind of POS device you are using. If you are using a 'magnetic stripe' payment card you are at risk the moment that card leaves your hands. So called 'smart cards' for what I know cannot be skimmed, then again there might be people out there that might be able to read those cards.

The secret world of piracy and electronic fraud knows no boundaries when it comes to bypassing any security vulnerabilities. I've read articles about embedded micros that have had their security fuses blown to protect the intellectual property to have someone come along and perform various 'black magic' by 'hitting' the 'secure device' with a relatively high (10-15V) signal voltages on some of the various pins of interest during an attempted read cycle. It seems that a digital device can be secure under normal operating conditions. Up the anti and start hitting it with hammer or with unusual voltages and you might be surprised how vulnerable a device might be.

Paypal are trialling a new bluetooth LE -based POS node.

BTLE security doesn't really exist. So, it will be interesting.

A scammers delight, nice easy way to skim a card. Perhaps I am paranoid but I never let my cards out of my sight and always tug on the front of ATM to check for skimmers.
I once had a card cloned in a duty free at Gatwick airport the person behind the till said "oh this machine does not work I will have to use another" and as I was in a hurry to catch a plane I did not stop to think what was going on, but before my very eyes and with my help, I was asked to enter my pin into the other terminal my card was cloned in front of me.
It was only when I came to check out at a hotel and my card was declined that I realised anything was wrong, when I got home I discovered that the bank had detected that my card was being used both in Portugal and the UK virtually simultaneously and so had blocked it luckily they had only made a small test purchase in Manchester of mobile phone time before it was stopped and the bank refunded that as well.
Such items as this should be banned and I most certainly would not use one to make payment, I would walk away first.

My card got skimmed once, nobody knows how. Was maxed out. Got all of it back from Mastercard. Insurance rocks. Why should one be careful?

Which is probably why I pay cash there as well. ;)

Chip cards are already being cloned, though most of the time the magstripe data is cloned. There have been a few instances ( a whole lot in a major store chain discovered to be cloning cards and only by accident by an anal manager who was sending one faulty unit back and asked the mass and then checked and the ones they had were heavier) of the readers being subverted and being used to make fake magstripe cards ( same data on the chip and stripe) along with there being instances of MITM attacks on the cards to convince offline terminals ( those that do not phone home for small purchases) to accept any card as valid and to allow the transaction.
