Sodium-ion battery to power latest Chinese EV
« on: April 16, 2023, 05:22:46 pm »
I wasn't aware that this was actually a practical technology yet, and it could still be hype, but CATL are announcing that a "Chery EV" will be powered by a sodium-ion battery.

The early information suggests similar energy density to LiFePO4 but at approximately half the raw material cost.  No info on lifetime / weight / power density yet.  It apparently performs better at lower temperatures, offering 90% of range at -20C, and can be fast charged 80% in 15 minutes.  It is possible that the pack will be a hybrid combining a smaller lithium-ion element to boost peak power output, as one limitation of sodium-ion has been high power delivery, as CATL have spoken about this in the past with sodium-ion.
