I don't know, but it probably looks cooler. Calculator batteries can last for a long time, so solar isn't really necessary. Also, if it's purely solar with no batteries, if the power source cuts out, you can loose your calculations.

Still, solar is a nice addition (when you have battery option as well), and I think recently more of the cheap solar calculators are real than before. I haven't verified this, however.

EEVBlog already feels like a conspiracy forum litered with BUSTED!!!!11!!one! threads everywhere, even the main YT channel is getting on the stupid side with so much BUSTED!!!! crap.

OK, I actually frequented one of Melbourne's top discotheques in the late 70's called Tatlers. Most unusual for someone heavily into electronics.

I don't have any solar calculators that are less than 30 years old. All three still work, so why would I buy another?

I have never relied on the solar functionality - unless you call holding your finger over the solar cell to see just how dim the screen could get before losing the data - "relying on".

Seems like an odd thing to try to fake.  Why even bother.  I guess it can influence the buying choice when someone is choosing a calculator at a store.  "oh it has a solar cell that's good to have" and they pick it up vs another one.
