Title: Spammers attacking
Post by: armandas on August 13, 2010, 12:18:49 pm
Dave, you're finally famous :D

List of spammers

Forget about the list, there's probably tens of them. Just had a look at newest members, and most of those with websites are suspicious..
You might want to consider adding CAPTCHA to the registration form.

There is a captcha, and a human response question as well, but they still get through, and it's getting worse.
I'll have to look into some extra anti-spam plugin's.

Dave.

They published a workaround to violate the SMF captcha barrier so they are useless now.

In our SMF forum (http://www.todopic.com.ar/foros/) there are 3 or 4 spammers registering per day. They can't activate their accounts because they use fake emails and they don'r receive the activation links. They don't cause any harm for now and from time to time I ban them to avoid further damages.  ;D

I'd recommend to send an activation email so that only real people can register. Normally, spammers are bots. And it's a good idea to install some antispam add-ons.

I already have email activiation, an image captca, and an anti-spam human question, yet they still get through!

Well, human spammers will always get thru. Only human moderators and administrators will block them. ;)

Maybe some simple electronics-related qualifying questions might filter some of them...

there's already a SMF 2.0 which fixes this and a lot of other security issues, but still not a final version [RC3 last time i checked]

Where's the spam for the cheap surplus quarter VGA TFT LCD displays, 200lumen/watt
Cree LEDs, Nixie tubes, Xilinx FPGA's, and LeCroy Oscilloscopes?  :-)

Obviously these people don't know anything about the lists they are spamming...

How about modify the policy so that the email and IP addresses of spammers get published when caught? Let the spammers spam each other.

It already exists:
http://www.stopforumspam.com/

Whenever I find somebody who smells like spam... I verify his IP address on that list and if he is guilty, I ban him.

There must be some SMF add-on which consults that spam list every once in a while. When you ban somebody, his IP gets automatically inserted to the black list.

I don't verify, I just kill'em!

I wish it worked like the Akismet plugin for Wordpress. I'm now getting over 3000 attempted spam comments a month on my wordpress blog, but Akismet stats show it has caught 99.845% of them!
