Starship prototype 150m hop
« on: August 05, 2020, 12:11:54 pm »
This flying "grain silo" which is 9 meters in diameter and about as high as a 15 story building was launched about half of a day ago. It was not flying straight because it's single engine is mounted off center (mounting intended for 3 engines).

Impressive. Wide enough aspect ratio not to need legs! A nasty looking fire around the engine from about 35s in the first video.

There are six legs which you can see deployed. It's just they are as wide as rocket itself.

Ha yes, I didn't notice them deploy - I was too busy watching the engine.  I'd been thinking they looked more like scaffolding feet.

I think your neighbors might complain about the noise. And broken windows. And the roof being blown away.
On the other hand, the fire would probably shut them up.

Anyway, that thing is absolutely huge. I can't wait until they launch the entire Super Heavy. If they can pull it off, they're going to disrupt the entire space launch market.

This looks like when you accidentally launch prematurely in SimpleRockets and decide to see how your half rocket will fly for giggles.

Well done SpaceX, only the second flight in history of a full flow closed cycle staged combustion engine.

Here's an interesting article on the Raptor engine and what makes it special:

That's OK. It happens to a lot of guys.

It's crazy to see that thing fly.     Should paint it and build it out to be same aspect ratio as a Panasonic 18650.  Have that come down and land near the crowd on Battery Day and Elon Musk pops out of a hatch.  That would be one hell of an entrance.  :-DD
