It took long enough!  The book was written in 1978:

I also have the blueprints for the Starship Enterprise (1975):

I case you don't realize, these are the devs who got f***** over by the lawyers of CBS by creating the Enterprise D as a game mod.

It's not quite that simple. I think if you don't chase up infringements rigorously, you can lose the rights to things like trademarks. So the law(s) may be forcing them into such actions.

Example:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/oliverherzfeld/2013/02/28/failure-to-enforce-trademarks-if-you-snooze-do-you-lose/

Quote
What Should Trademark Owners Do?

Trademark owners should diligently protect their trademarks from infringement and other misuse (e.g., blurring, tarnishment, unfair competition, passing off, false advertising and cybersquatting) that may harm the owner's goodwill and business reputation. A trademark owner is not required to uncover all possible uses that might conflict, or immediately commence a lawsuit against every possible infringer. At the same time, a complete failure to enforce will lead to a weakening of an owner’s marks, loss of distinctiveness over time and, as we saw in this case, potential forfeiture of certain available remedies.

Yeah. Maybe.

They were saying that CBS wasn't even interested in allowing a path of endorsement/revenue.

Although I was giving an option, where CBS, could have just been doing what they had to do. In reality, it wouldn't surprise me if they wouldn't have done/allowed it, anyway.
A bit like when someone makes a nice music video, of their own design (the way the video is done) and music playing/singing, but the song/tune is from a famous band. The video then gets taken down because of copyright infringements.
Which can make one sorry for the upcoming artists big effort, at making that video, only to see it taken down, later.

tl;dr
David vs Goliath
