Starting your own small business

I put up a web store selling electronic units to a very niche market about 20 years ago. I selected an open source package that was an offshoot of osCommerce, but the version I'm using doesn't seem to be actively developed anymore.
I may end up replacing it with an osCommerce ssytem at some point.
If your business is more of a consultant or service type, then this may not be what you want. There are TONS of packages you can download and run on a web server for various types of businesses. I recommend using a Linux platform, and can suggest some things to do to secure the site. (I had two successful breakins about 10-15 years ago, and had to add some more stringent security measures. Hasn't been a problem since then.
I would not try to build a complete web store, it is just WAY too compiicated. If you want to just build a set of pages that link to each other and descibe what you do, then WordPress can do it. Or, you can learn just the simplest html and do it all bare bones. Beside my web store in osCmax, I have technical documents and other pages related to my interests, all done in bare html with a text editor.

Go for a readily made package. If you need a webshop then look for a website hoster that offers premade packages for a webshop including payment interfaces. It will save you a lot of work. Building a website from the ground up won't be beneficial.

I am not a web developer and I am just a simple user, but I always wanted to make my own small candle business website.

Just go with Wordpress and Woocommerce for sales, no value added by doing anything yourself.
Although Woocommerce can be a bit fiddy to use, there are easier options there if required.
