1024x1024 pixel lcd?
« on: June 18, 2021, 10:14:53 am »
I'm working on an engine to track my blog activity; I need to figure out what the average resolution of the devices visiting my site is, and I see this:

Code: [Select]
Chrome:1024x1024x24@UnknownOS

it looks weird, is there *really* a laptop or tablet with a 1024x1024 pixel lcd?  :-//

Some early plasma display panels made by Hitachi-Fujitsu were widescreen 1024 pixels wide and 1024 pixels tall.  So non square pixels.   For even more confusion technically they were 1024x512 resolution panels but they could discharge each sub pixel on the top or bottom alternately (ALIS technology) which effectively doubled its resolution.   (They later extended to 50" panels with a 1280x1080 resolution before their 'last gasp' being a 55" 1920x1080 panel.)

The 1024x1024 ALIS panels often advertised themselves as 1024x768 or 1368x768 resolution panels by VGA EDID, but if I recall correctly, they did have a native mode that allowed use of the full pixel array - perhaps your viewer has done that...

Or, perhaps, more likely, they're fuzzing this data to prevent the very tracking you're trying to do;  UnknownOS might be a clue to this!

Available screen height and width come from this JavaScript

Code: [Select]
function browser_info_probe()
{
   var ans;

   var y1 = screen.availHeight;    // Available Height
   var y2 = screen.availWidth;     // Available Width
   var y3 = screen.colorDepth;     // Color Depth
   var y4 = screen.height;         // Total Height
   var y5 = screen.width;          // Total Width
   var y6 = screen.pixelDepth;     // Color Resolution
...

If the os would report a normal mobile OS then it could also be a smartwarch.

This is the JavaScript code that reports the OS

Code: [Select]
function OS_probe()
{
  var ans;

  if (false)
  {
    ans = "test";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Windows NT 10.0")!= -1)
  {
    ans="Windows10";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Windows NT 6.2") != -1)
  {
    ans="Windows8";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Windows NT 6.1") != -1)
  {
    ans="Windows7";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Windows NT 6.0") != -1)
  {
    ans="WindowsVista";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Windows NT 5.1") != -1)
  {
    ans="WindowsXP";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Windows NT 5.0") != -1)
  {
    ans="Windows2000";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Mac")            != -1)
  {
    ans="Mac/iOS";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("X11")            != -1)
  {
    ans="UNIX";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Linux")          != -1)
  {
    ans="Linux";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Android")        != -1)
  {
    ans="Android";
  }
  else
  {
    ans = "UnknownOS";
  }

  return ans;
}

Definitively, but I see log like this
Quote
Chrome:412x732x24@Linux
Which presents two problems
1) it's a vertical screen -> should I support horizontal scroll?
2) it's very small, and not exactly VGA -> should I re-scale fonts etc?

so for cases like this, I am in the process of supporting dedicated small-pages with dedicated CSS, but I need to know how many visitors have these devices, etc.

I've known people who would lower the resolution of their monitors as a way of doing screen scaling. It hurts me to see such awesome pixel technology being limited like this but many or even most programs and websites aren't designed around people with vision issues.

I'm in the process of building a vintage PC with XGA resolution (1024x768) and Windows 98 SE but I have no plans to browse the web with that.

There's a couple basic mobile-friendly options to add to...basically everything on the internet, and yes, doing HTML/CSS for lenient, flexible layout ("responsive") is a very good idea.

Ideas:
https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_responsive.asp

The viewport meta tag is the secret incantation that makes mobile browsers format the page as, well, a mobile browser.  The default is desktop style, with tiny scale and ugly layout -- various things referenced to width (percent) versus absolute pixels will be all out of whack, text flows within the screen, or doesn't, etc.

See also Google Search Console for reports on your live site.

Web browsers will automatically flow content to fit, unless you deliberately try to stop that (which is a really bad idea). This is the voice of experience seeing too many web designers overthinking things and making webpages worse for everyone except the tiny fraction they explicitly "support".

You mentioned it's a blog, which means straightforward text and images.

Your "strange sized linux" is almost certainly an Android phone in portrait mode.

Your OS detection willdetect many Android devices as "Linux".

A quick grep of my access log from today...

Code: [Select]
$ cat todays-access-log-from-my-own-site.log | grep Linux | grep Android | grep -v bot | grep -Po '"[^"]+"$' | sort | uniq

You mentioned it's a blog, which means straightforward text and images.

Yes, text and images. But I have three CSS-classes
- desktop (large screen)
- mobile tablet (medium screen)
- mobile smartphone (small screen)
and the site itself dynamically adapts the content-style to the screen-resolution of the visiting client.

For instance, for mobile-smartphones it doesn't show the header and the footer area to save precious pixels, and even the navigation menu is different and simplified to make the navigation more comfortable.

Your OS detection willdetect many Android devices as "Linux".

i don't know, looking at the JavaScritp code

Code: [Select]
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Linux")          != -1)
  {
    ans="Linux";
  }
  else if (window.navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Android")        != -1)
  {
    ans="Android";
  }

The window.navigator.userAgent field reports different things  :-//

Anyway, actually my problem is what is reported as screen resolution.
