Hmmm ... I don't think it would be very romantic to use a light. However, in certain situations it could be useful I suppose.

A first I believe! An included potato in the accessories!

I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

Could be quite a clever one! Demonstrates the capability of the kit, and catches the eye of potential purchasers. And, of course, appeals to the geek mindset. What's not to like?

So that's what those "mini-wrench" accessories are for.

I wasn't aware they were made with different metals.

The use of potatos in electronics is actually obvious, but they are doing it wrong.

Yes, the 75mV does say something about the consistency of their plating.

Re: Electronic Image FAILS Virginmedia "Optical fibre" COAX bullshit
« Reply #836 on: January 23, 2023, 05:59:55 am »
Not a stock photo but an advert:

"Optical Fibre" but all they show is a coax cable.
I don't see any fibre optical cable in the advert.

Now that looks like an image fail to me.

I could do those same things back in 2001 as I can do now when it was called NTL but at a very slow rate except for streaming videos all using that same cable.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2008/feb/06/asa.virginmedia
Quote
Mark Sweney Wed 6 Feb 2008 07.12 GMT
Virgin's ad campaign made a string of claims, such as asserting that its fibre-optic cable broadband service "doesn't use copper wire like most providers and doesn't slow down no matter how far you live from the telephone exchange".
...
Both Sky and TalkTalk contended that the so-called "last mile" of Virgin Media's service into a house does in fact run through copper wires.
...
The company dismissed the complaints, arguing that its claims were fair because it used "aluminium or steel wire with a copper coating" and that the use of "active signal amplifiers" meant that broadband speeds did not degrade.
I didn't know they used CCA coax cable.

Quote
Virgin's campaign was cleared by the ASA on all 10 points the complainants made.
I see that's why there is an image fail of an advert because they have been allowed to get away with it for so long.

So 9 years down the line and they are still at it promoting this nonsense:

From aliexpress. I spotted three problems with this image.

Both leads are in the wrong socket (does that count as 2?)
I don't think other end of the leads are touching anything (2 again?)
76.3A will blow the fuse in the meter and in the house (2?)
It shows DC on the display
The bar graph does not show anything

The sheer illustration of a meter connected to mains in current measurement mode is a problem.

And it took some photoshopping to show it that way. The meter actually has a neat feature where it mechanically blocks the incorrect jacks:

The sheer illustration of a meter connected to mains in current measurement mode is a problem.

It's from the alternate reality where houses have 1A constant-current outlets rather than 240V constant-voltage.

Need 1kW for your vacuum cleaner?  Wire it to be 1000 ohms.

Every powerpoint's switch is a shorting shunt.  They have to stay shunted when not in use.  You hook up your appliances in parallel and then disable the shunt.

Instead of fuses (blow open on 10A over-current) you have voltage threshold tubes (short on 240V over-voltage).  Reset them by flicking the powerpoint shunt switch on.

Nothing is ground referenced.  All circuits in the house are run on transformers (one transformer per circuit).

Maybe it is a top secret meter mod to measure aether and the picture has been leaked prematurely.  Certainly Aetherist https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?u=832091 will want to jump on this bandwagon

Also, does the image try to convey the idea that the rotary switch has a LED on the 'tip' to illuminate the current setting?
(because, rule #76.3 of cheap marketing, you can always increase the device coolness by adding one more LED)

Non-diffused blue LEDs, so the whole room gets a neat cloudy cosmos projection at night.
