Stupid Question - YouTube Quality
« on: April 12, 2023, 03:11:04 am »
I don't know if this is the right place for it but it is only me who now can't get more than 480P for videos that were available before in 1080P via the Mobile App in the same conditions as before?

Example, on Laptop on the same wifi network and the same VPN server no problems.

On mobile the same video with the same configuration doesn't allow the selection of a higher bit rate.

Extra info, I already deleted the app, cleared all the settings and configurations from the phone and reinstalled, same problem.

Nah, I can still get 1080p on mobile in HK, both wifi and 4G works fine. I do pay for Youtube premium though.

I can't say I've noticed that kind of behaviour. If you're not seeing the options at all (regardless your connection speed), it usually comes down to the capabilities of your device/software. I have noticed on laptops/PCs video drivers and different web browsers can play a role in this.

Since it's your mobile application, maybe the latest version has a bug in it?

Just viewed few seconds ago at my Android tablet below 4K video, played smoothly and no problem what so ever.

Could be your cell phone company limiting the bandwidth.

Youtube is constantly screwing around with things and often their changes are very stupidly implemented. It could easily be a problem on their end.

You can use firefox with adblock + sponsorblock instead of the built in youtube app, then another plugin to force the resolution if needed, so much better. Although less user friendly UI.
Profile -> Modify profile -> Look and Layout ->  Don't show users' signatures

Update about the issue:

Now it doesn't happen anymore. So IDK what it was...

Could speculate a lot of stuff but I'm not going to really worry about it. Thank you anyway.

Which platform?

I have solutions for both iOS and Android handsets (I use both daily):

iOS: I run an iOS "Shortcut" which receives the input I send it from the "Share" button on YT app, SSH's it to my Mac/Pi/whatever *nix thing I have online, tells the box to run "yt-dlp -f <format_id> -g <shortcut_input_(which is the URL)>" and sends it back to my phone via iMessage as a RAW m3u8 URL (NO ADS!) and whatever res I want (720p is "-f 22" using "yt-dlp") - I tap the URL from iMessage, and Safari plays it  :)

On Android: simply install "Smart Tube Next" APK from github, and then when you press "Share" button on Android YT app, just share it to the "Smart Tube Next" app, which will play your video (again, AD FREE!)

(Attached): How to get the formats list for a given YT URL, using "yt-dlp" (DO NOT use "youtube-dl" - it is ancient and outdated, lacks new features. Pertinent command highlighted in red ("-F" flag to get formats list)
