Awesome, thank you for the link
Cool.
I wonder how may are tapped by the NSA?
My guess would be all of 'em.
pretty neat, wish it had labels on the map.
sort of curious who owns the link which attaches to tuktoyaktuk
Nice post, thanks !
Although most are fiber optic, just curious if those north pole cables that are still using electrical wires run at better efficiency than those laid at hotter regions since they're a lot cooler (lower resistance) ?
Very cool! I've always been curious about this and it's somewhat hard to find information on.

Clicking the fibre route itself brings up more information in the right hand panel. Some have more info than others. The one I think you're asking about is the Arctic Fibre which is planned to be laid in 2014, they are in planning stages now. The concept seems to be shortest-path transit between Japan and the UK subsidizing the northern landing points.
Anyone have any idea what the various cable colours / sizes on the maps mean?
Cool.

Each line is at least recorded at the beginning and the end.
Well every day's a school day! I didn't know any fibres came ashore at Sennen Cove in Cornwall (where I'm from). I thought they all came ashore at Porthcurno.
If any of you are on your holidays down in Cornwall I can highly recommend the Telegraph museum at Porthcurno. Tons of fascinating stuff and most of it it inside huge bomb proof caverns inside the cliffs built by local miners during WW2 to house wartime comms equipment.

It seems a bit sus that all the cables marked as 'future' are scheduled for completion in 2014
Cool.

The sad truth. This point embarrasses me as an American.
Cool.

You know why the NSA is the the best of the U.S. government agencies?
Because it's the only one that actually listens to the people.
Bwahahahahahaha

Wow, good one. Too long for a bumper sticker but I'll figure out a good way to use it!

ah, java and my chrome don't play well together. I clicked on the cables and got zilch.
Cool.

All the ones that are not tapped already by the GCHQ, The Brits got there first.
i wouldn't say all the cables are tapped, because i don't know that, and there's probably a number of fiber cables that have been laid without knowledge.
But i do know they stopped using 55 gallon drum sized lithium batteries to power the active taps when a few people got killed when one of them blew up due to accidental short.
I don't know what they replaced them with for certain, my guess is RTGs

For cables with landing sites in the US or UK it's very simple. Either there are sub-tenant of the landing sites or got private rooms in the carrier's main datacenters (like Room 641A at AT&T, see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A).
