Suggestions on a good reflow solder paste
« on: April 26, 2014, 07:37:36 pm »
Getting into hot air reflow soldering. Have all my gear but need to select a good solder paste. There's a fair selection of this stuff out there so I thought I'd ask my forum colleagues for advice.

It's my first time using reflow and I don't have a dispenser system (we'll see how that goes). How does Chip Quik 63/37 sound for use with hot air? How about Water Soluble vrs No Clean?

Use no-clean. Water-soluble must be washed thoroughly or it will corrode your board. Chip Quik is fine brand-wise.

ChipQuik is good stuff, as is Amtech and ZephPaste (small quantity syringes available, ~30g or so). Zeph has a 1yr lifespan when kept refrigerated.

Thanks. I'll check them out. Quick Chip claims it's stuff doesn't require refrigeration.

Instead of dispensing system you can use stencils, I am getting much better results this way, oshstencils.com has inexpensive stencils (pick the 5 mil) and the arrive way before the PCB.

Look at the specs, they claim 1 year with refrigeration, half year without on room temperature. Now roomtemperature is 18oC and its lifetime goes fast down when temperature goes up. Better place it in the fridge between sessions.
