£0.01 GPS module
« on: November 20, 2013, 12:19:58 pm »
I stumbled across this:
http://www.buildyourowndrone.co.uk/MediaTek-MT3329-GPS-10Hz-Adapter-Basic-p/gps-mt3329.htm
Maybe that's why they're sold out... :o

But seriously, it's amazing how cheap GPS modules have become (< £10 last time I checked).

Rather, it's likely that they've set the price to £0.01 as a default when it's sold out. £0.01 is certainly a tad too low, yes.

Tips , if you want a benchmark for common easy to find stuff, try search for similar item at Aliexpress first or Taobao (just look at the price, ignore the Chineese lang), then you will have the idea if the price is realistically low or not.  ;D

Do euros less than 1.00 have names? Such as nickles, dimes, quarters...

Cent is of course from the French language (their old currency the Franc has cents as well).

More like Latin, cent, centrum - a 100th, centi- a 1/100 ...

A woman goes to her butcher Feinberg and asks the price of lamb chops.
"$2.50 a pound," he tells her.
"But Cohen across the street sells them for $2.00 a pound," she protests.
"Nu, so go buy from Cohen," says the butcher.
"He's all out," she explains.
"Oh," says Feinberg, "when I'm out of lamb chops they're only $1.50 a pound."

Just cents normally. Cent is of course from the French language (their old currency the Franc has cents as well).

Sub £10 GPS modules are a reality though. We use some at work and they are actually pretty good. Lock on quickly from cold, reliable and pretty good on power consumption. The only down side is that being so compact they tend to lack extensive power supply filtering, so you do need to take some care on that end. Nothing fancy, but we did have issues with a very noise LCD module (or perhaps the controller IC).
I dug around a little more and found the IC itself sells for <£2: http://detail.1688.com/offer/1198487098.html

It's odd how big the price range is: I've found modules with the same IC and antenna selling for more than £50, so most of it is profit.
