Tapatalk Alternatives
« on: September 18, 2019, 09:49:14 pm »
With Tapatalk support being removed from the forum, does anyone have any ideas for a replacement?

The mobile site is a really bad experience compared to Tapatalk.

Features I am looking for are:

* Night mode / dark theme
* Endless threads (no pagination)
* Each time you view a thread, it should take you to where you have previously read up to. On a 100 page thread, trying to manually find where you have read up to is horrible.
* Favourite threads, participated threads, unread threads etc
* Inline images.
* text size control. I like to have tiny text so I can read faster without constant scrolling.

I doubt I will ever browse the forum on my phone anymore because the experience is so frustrating and clunky. I'd like to find an alternative!

I would be happy to pay the $99 for Dave to get a custom EEVblog SMF app if that offered the features I am after. I am not sure it does though, and I can't really find any info about it.

I just use the desktop version on my phone. I totally agree that the mobile view sucks. (Though I found Tapatalk to be super irritating so I deleted it quickly.)

Agree - mobile devices have excellent resolution so the general desktop site works perfectly

* Night mode / dark theme

By the way, with the desktop version we have several optional themes we can chose, besides the default. All of those other themes suck.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had a dark theme option?

To be honest, EEVBlog is one of the most active forums I've used yet the one with the most disappointing UI in general, not to mention the mobile site. At the end of the day, you stay for content not presentation but I think with removal of Tapatalk support we could benefit from a couple new CSS sheets to bring the look into 2019.

However, I imagine most people who use this forum that are over 35/40 years of age will be disgruntled by any changes to their beloved page, so it would have to be an option at the bottom for a 'dark mode' or 'new style' vs 'classic' or something of that sort.

Also @bsfeechannel - I looked around and didn't see anywhere to change themes of any sort...there's only the mobile link and rss and all that at the bottom, and the stuff in Profile doesn't seems connected. I must have missed it.

Edit: Ok so I did miss it - I'm an idiot. But anyways....wow....holy shit....You aren't lying that the other themes are absolutely horrible.

I guess the full forum works ok if you are happy to spend half your time zooming in and out so you can press the tiny navigation buttons every 30 seconds.

Maybe if you are a slow reader it might work ok, as a smaller percentage of time would be wasted in navigation tasks.

I didn't realise how much I relied on Tapatalk until it got yanked.

I'm not sure if a CSS skin would be able to add features such as endless scroll? (I'm not a web developer in case you can't tell)
If it can however, I'd be interested in coming up with something! I already use Stylus on my desktop browsers to reskin the hideous look of the default forum.

The forum uses SMF - there are already a variety of "themes" made for the forum software @EEVBlog is running. It's just a question of whether or not they run effectively without modification - I don't know how much custom work that Dave (and friends) has done to get the site up to his tastes.

The UX dark theme is really schmick.
