Title: Target 3001 PCB CAD package
Post by: david77 on March 07, 2012, 03:54:38 pm
As Dave's been looking into different PCB CAD packages recently I thought I'd ask if someone here has tried out Target 3001?
There's a free version available with similar limitations as Diptrace. Prices for the licensed versions seem reasonable.
The package even includes a simulator.

I've been playing around with it for the last couple of days and so far quite like what I see. Their components library is quite impressive.

I'd love to hear what others think as I'm seriously considering spending some money on a CAD package.

I used this package to layout a PCB for a project at school. It was decent, but there were ads everywhere inside the program, which I didn't like at all.

Perhaps they removed them, but they were all over the place!

If you ever happen to browse http://www.mikrocontroller.net/ (http://www.mikrocontroller.net/) (german) you will find never ending discussions of Eagle vs Target 3001 on the forums.

I've never tried it myself.

Florian,

I try to avoid that place as much as I can. I think it's a very agressive place, a lot of topics just end in people insulting each other - I really don't need that. There's a lot of frustrated people there.

I hope someone here with PCB design experience will leave some feedback regarding Target.

Hi,

the new V17 (http://server.ibfriedrich.com/wiki/ibfwikien/index.php?title=New_in_V17) supports now differential routing and meander!  :-+

Differential Pairs
In balance: Transmit information electrically with two complementary signals sent on two paired wires. Design those "Differential Pairs" using this new feature.
Meander a track
At the same time: Create absolutely identical track lengthes by elongating a shorter one in meander-style design.
Impedance calculator
High Frequency: The Impedance calculator recommends a track width recognizing various StripLine alternatives.

Cheers

Wow, they jump from 4 to 100 layers!

I would have said Medium 4 layer, pro maybe 16.

Front panel stuff looks nice.

Bit more professional than DipTrace, the top package is a bit more pricier, would it be fair-er to compare it against something like Proteus rather than DT?

Can it do micro processor simulation like Proteus?

I have never used it but it does look nice.

Sorry for the very late reply to this comment. Yes I am under the same impression. There are a lot of trolls on that forum as well. I think that's because anonymous posting is allowed there. But in general I am under the impression that in german tech forums (Hifi, Microcontroller, etc.) people rather like to insult each other or letting the asking person look like an idiot/fool or showing of with their superior knowledge instead of trying to be helpful. Totally unlike the english forums like Diy-Audio, Audio-Karma and this one.

Just my 2 cents.

Judging by the flags in the left column... it seems few people outside of Germany has heard of it, I certainly hadn't.  Was it only recently translated into English or something?

Totally unlike the english forums like Diy-Audio, Audio-Karma and this one.

To be fair, there are plenty of English language forums that are full of assholes as well.
