But I found this a great initiative and donated some trees myself.

Almost certainly not, but $20 might well plant 20 trees or $50, 50 trees. Labour costs etc. get amortised across a larger number of trees. Volume, as in all 'manufacture' is all.

Uh huh certainly. I was thinking about labour costs as well; might take some exploitation of people in poor countries to do this at a reasonable cost? Oh well.

Just saying, the initiative looks pretty nice, but I would just like to know how this is going to be carried out exactly and that there will be means of checking what has actually been planted in the end before donating. Also, it would be nice to know the approximate fraction of trees that will actually survive among all that have been "planted".

This is nothing more than a cash cow. They are selling merch as well. Tell me how long it will take to plant 20M trees and what is the logistics of that. You do not just pick a spot in a city and dig a hole there for a tree. You need proper permissions and everything else. This is a scheme. They do something but not nearly at million tree count scale.

They are supporting reforestation projects, not planting individual new trees in city parks. So I don't doubt that the money is well invested.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for saving the Earth, but planting 20 million trees over a period of three years is not going to do it, not by a long shot.
To put it in perspective, 20 million trees is roughly the number of trees being cut down every day.

You do know that teamtrees is a fundraiser for the National Arbor Day Foundation? But of course, directly donating to them is probably the safest way, also in terms of tax-advantage.

It turns out a lot of deforestation is caused by factory farming. Therefore, we should boycott factory farming and replace it with sustainable farming!

Well that is exactly what they showed to the investors when they came to Shark Tank. Planting individual trees in parks. They came for investment money to Shark Tank, they are running a business. Guess what, investors always want their money back.

I could see it being $1 per tree, typically they'll get students to go into an area that's recently been harvested and they go and plant, and get paid per tree. The trees are in large trays.  There is a special gun device the saplings drop into and it plants them so you can do quite a lot in a short time.

Well, I’m certainly not around since 1872. 

The #teamtrees initiative brings this to a broader audience, which I find a good thing.
