Wikipedia says 18, but they were used without (significant) moding on the HP 8517A/B test sets rated for 50 GHz, so... :-// Good question.

The HP8517, properly calibrated, will have compensated for any small-ish deviations from the connector.

True enough, but that reasoning only goes so far. For instance, if a mode results in large impedance excursions at certain frequencies and you connect the test set to an amplifier port that expects something close to 50R, you might need to de-embed the results.
As in, "de-embed" the fragments of the MMIC package from your ceiling tiles.
Paul Horowitz:
Winfield and I are happy to sign books, but the shipping to and fro complicates things. Win has sometimes bought copies of AoE3, which we've then signed and put on eBay for a fixed "buy it now" price that covers our costs (book plus postage). We'll probably continue that tradition, which aligns well with our test purchases (for checking for counterfeits).

FYI, in response to someone receiving the book, Win Hill points out...
Whoa, lucky you! Paul and I haven't even gotten our
on-order boxes of books yet.
BTW, reminder, CUP's 20% discount is over 29 February.
