The Art of Electronics X-Chapters

Paul and I are days away from turning in the
manuscript on our new x-Chapters book, and I
decided to add this and a few other cheap
 AC-to-DC-power circuits, for entertainment.
So I created one with SPICE, ...

Let's hope that creeping featureitis doesn't intervene :)

Well that is just plain wonderful! I was just looking for something in AoE the other day and they referenced an X-chapter.

Very occasionally I don't mind doing viral marketing. More tantalisation...

Quote
Read and comment.  AoE x-Chapters,
 High-Speed op-amps section, DRAFT.

Recall, the AoE x-Chapters are advanced material that
was meant to come after each relevant chapter, can skip
on a quick first read, go back later for detailed info.
But as main book was growing over 2000 pages, we opted to
bring out main book first, including x-Chapter cross refs,
follow with x-Chapter book.   As explained in the preface.

26 pages of good stuff, from new sections 4x.5 and 4x.6
Chapter 4x is to supplement H&H AoE III, chapters 4,5,8.
(Full Chapter 4x is now 146 pages long, still growing.)

DRAFT, but getting close to being complete.

Are explanations excellent, good, OK, or confusing?
Examine tables, any of your favorite parts missing?**
Want a separate low-power table?  Can we skip that?
Is the CFB op-amp scene explained well enough?
Did you like VFB scatterplots?  Need some for CFB?
Have a favorite trick that should be included?
Make comments here or send to winfieldhill@yahoo.com

https://www.dropbox.com/s/aemtyly16mtj87n/Op-amps_High-speed_ch4x_DRAFT.pdf?dl=0

** For op-amps that come in multiple variants, i.e.,
single, dual, quad, we list only one part, and show
 # per pkg variants in next column, so you may not see
your part, e.g., we show OPA192, not OPA2192 or OPA4192.
As you can see, we were forced to economize on space.

The end of the tantalisation is in sight...

Last night we handed over finished latex and
eps files, for AoE The x-Chapters, to our
 long-suffering editor at CUP.

Amazing stuff * went in during the last 10 days,
plus I get to make submissions and corrections
for maybe three more weeks, while the files
are being processed.  The draft pdf version
 has over 650 pages.

 * Hundreds of explorations and explanations
of exotic engineering stuff you need to know.
 * A dozen varied examples of using power MOSFETs
 to solve difficult linear-circuit problems.
 * A neat TIA amplifier with an 8-decade dynamic
range, 12-bit precision, not a log converter!
Example use: a starlight to sunlight digitizer.
 * A true DC transformer. Keep your extra energy.
 * Control your piezo with charge, not voltage.
 * 1.2kV HV amplifier, with DC-to-1MHz range.
 * 100V 5A DC-10MHz 1000V/us power amplifier.
 * More light, pulse your LED at 200 amps.
 * Fast 1.5kV 2pF floating current source.
 * Hundreds of other cool things, too tired to
 type, need sleep.

Sample bits of it are floating around, if you know where to look, and it looks worth the wait.

Thanks for the heads-up!

However, based on my experience with the main volume of the 3rd edition, I will not buy the first printing, but wait for a corrected printing. The length of the errata list was a bit of a disappointment... I would have hoped for a trade-in option for buyers of the first printing (get a discount on a corrected printing when turning in your original version), but realize that this is wishful thinking.

I'm sure I'll think about something else for the Christmas wishlist!

OK, but then who's gonna find the errors?  Plus, don't you want you name up in the errata fame pages?

I can't tell, did anybody put up the DropBox link for the draft 26-page High-speed Op-amps section?  Check out the tables, scatterplots and measurements.

Patience :). It takes as much as it takes. I'm glad they split the book into two, so we can already enjoy the 3rd edition, and now X-chapters are coming. Can't imagine how much effort it takes.

Regrettably that's become a pretty exclusive community! It feels like a group of acquaintances in a pub, not a large audience.

Having said that, I have given sufficient clues that your various excerpts could be found by those with sufficient interest.

Patience - Winfield Hill also has a day job!

As I found when I came across Navsh Wadhwa's paper on the speed/torque characteristics of the bacterial flagellar motor: http://www.pnas.org/lookup/doi/10.1073/pnas.1904577116. Win gets an acknowledgement 'for improvements in the electronics'. This is pretty cool - describing a dynamometer that measures a maximum torque of ~1250 pNm and a speed of ~16,000 rpm, on a biological motor which is a few tens of nm across (dynamically varying in size as stator units are added or deleted in response to the applied load - go read the paper!

For everybody's information:

Amazon now has the X-Chapters book up for pre-order with a due date of 31 January 2020. I don't know whether Amazon are hedging their bets with the date or whether the 1st Dec 2019 target date (as previously supplied by Winfield) has slipped.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?

Thanks, I had heard there was a paper, but I hadn't seen it.  "Improvements in the electronics", sheesh.  It's hard for engineers to get credit!  The experiment required me to create three complex instruments.  I conceived and designed all three, and supervised my technician building them, and then years later I created a new version of the third one, and after losing my technician, hand-made one: a DC-to-10MHz 100-volt 5A laboratory power amplifier, with a 1000V/us slew rate.  That's the AMP-70A, which has been explored on the DIY audio group (including a gang of fellows working with Jan Didden), and which is described in the new x-Chapter book, in section 2x.14.  Here's a draft copy.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mfy58xfcv1m1inb/AMP-70A_ch-2x14_aoex-DRAFT.pdf?dl=0
Or you can explore the entire AMP-70A DIY folder:

Thanks, that's interesting - and relevant to the ultrasonic transducer driver design I am currently pondering.

In paragraph 2x.14.1, you refer to 'a complementary push-pull emitter follower Q6-Q10'. I think that should be Q7-Q10.

OK, thanks, I've fixed it.  We still have another month to find and fix typos like that before the book goes to print, so any errors found or suggestions made are welcomed!

The last 11 pages of this 18-page section were just finished, and have not been reviewed by our copy editor (and may not be, as the book is going into page layout shortly), so we'd appreciate any comments, especially from sharp-eyed readers.

Hello Mr Hill,

I just started reading the pages and i found something.
In footnote 69, there is stated, that in the table stands die size 8mm2. That you can read it as 8mm by 8mm. But if my basics are quite right, it is wrong. Because 8mm by 8mm is 64mm2. Hope to hear from you.

Best regards,
Christiaan

Thanks for your comment and question.  Well, I see we were quoting IR's HEXFET Databook, HDB-1, 1981, page 96, as to their particular notation method.  Now I'd better go back to that 1981 source material and go through it again.  And of course, 8^2 and 8x8 are the same thing, 64 squares, 64 square mm, etc.
