  • Why shouldn't we question everything?

Guy has a 4004 :D

No I don't. Wish I did. I only have an 8008.

Call that a CPU collection? For Pete's sake, he has no RCA 1802, or Signetics 2650. Not even a Hitachi 6309. Pathetic I say. Also are we supposed to believe he's Russian? I don't see *anything* Addidas, so it doesn't seem likely.  >:D

But seriously, I'm impressed. More with his compiling the list, than the bedspread of CPUs.

He may still be typing, haha. It must have been an extremely difficult task to obtain those as I think he is in the Ukraine or Russia. He probably has the chip out of the W.O.P.R computer.  ;D

He misses all the new i3, i5 and i7 processors, but then this is probably a hobby where you start aquiring new items when they are completely obsolete  :-DD

Think the list has expanded considerably since the article was from 2010.  :)

Impressive, 22 cores with 2 threads each. What type of cooling do you use for those? Wonder if anyone has tried to cool with LiNO or liquid helium. That would be a project for the deep pocket.  :)

That is an unknown cpu to me, is this the prototype of the upcoming  Intel Xeon E5-2699 v4 , the only CPU I know of that is going to have 22 cores ?

that is pretty cool, we have an Intel fab plant right up the road, but they are not geared to produced the 14 nanos.  There is talk of going to to 10 nanos but who knows.

Only know of 2 or 3 companies that can etch a 10 nanos, and they are in early development. Fabbing a place to do those are in the billion of dollars range for a singe facility.

He doesnt seem to have the sun sparc CPU, they were used around the time of his collection till recent.

There is a sparc CPU of 16 cores each with 8 threads so more threads than intel xeon and multi CPU configuration. At one point sparc was used in industry outside datacenter for things like medical, defence, oil and gas for the faster encryption and compute in some tasks. Before the x86 went multicore there were already multicore sparc CPUs.

The TileGx CPU has 72 core and 100 core variants with multi CPU configurations possible. I have a 36 core variant of the CPU.

Good old times with these PIII & Celerons!
Could be easily overclocked with almost a factor 2!  :box:

Collecting modern chips could be expensive >:D.

God damn and I thought my setup was something. At least I just manage to win ram wise lol

Side note please post a cinebench score for that setup to make me cry even more.

edit: Here's mine.

Blueskull's 22 cores Intel CPU came to mind when I saw this just now:
http://www.orrazz.com/2016/08/researchers-at-princeton-have-built.html
Researchers at Princeton have built an open source 25-core chip that can easily be scaled to create a 200,000-core computer
Researchers want to give a 25-core open-source processor called Piton some serious bite.
The developers of the chip at Princeton University have in mind a 200,000-core computer crammed with 8,000 64-bit Piton chips.

I hate, loathe and distrust Intel enough that nothing they do can impress me anymore.
Open source CPUs on the other hand, are exciting.

I remember reading about the gate arrays when they were in the prototype stages and they seemed like the way forward. Sparc was never a joke in the world of processors, I remember wiping drool off the keyboard after looking at the ads in the publications of the time. I especially like the way they introduce a grid array for the processors, its like interlinking the optical carrier nodes in internet rings. Instead of having a set of redundant rings, the mesh would allow it to bypass many problems.

There are some serious bargains if you go a generation back on Xeon because datacentres are throwing them out in lieu of more power efficient devices in their 24x7 operations.

A couple of weeks ago I picked up a dual Xeon E5-2670 16 core, 32 thread with 96GB RAM for £650 a complete machine in 1U chassis. It attains a Cinebench score just over 2000. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/budget-xeon-based-pc-build_any-suggestions/msg1005456/#msg1005456

Despite being 1U, I've added a W4100 graphics card (supports 3 x 2160p60 monitors concurrently) and a couple of USB 3.0 ports internally since, a 500GB SSD for the OS and 4 x 120GB SSD in RAID0 (giving > 1GB/s sustained read and write speed). It's a serious beast for video rendering and running up proof of concept virtual infrastructure for distributed systems.

I tried to fit a gpu in my server, sadly it just didn't work, it may have been an issue with the pci extension cable but I don't know, there's a cable from the 10 pin on the mainboard that ends in a 6 pi and 6+2 pin, with the 6 pin it wouldn't even boot, with the 6+2 pin it booted but knocked out half of my ram, so I'm guessing it pulled the 12v rail down too much somehow, or the pci cable was screwed, have another two coming so I can try with a lot more slack.

I was hoping to try some games on it lol.

Here's the video for those interested, also just the slow motion angle grinding lol

I had been using a radeon 5450 to give a little more performance to my virtual machines with the remotefx adapter but for some reason I then had no video output on the card or the rear port on the server, couldn't find anything in the bios to fix it either. (even though the first time I booted up connected to the video card it did work.)

Tried it with the new PC, E5-1650 v4.   1180 cb / 143.93 fps.  It's blinding speed compared with my XP P4 box I had been using.  Writing emails and surfing does not take a lot of CPU power.   :-DD

Getting things to work is a bit of a struggle so far.  Two days and just getting to where I have my hardware is triggering an event in Labview.   Turns an indicator on when the hardware fires an interrupt.  All in Labview this time.   If its not fast enough, I'll get the DDK setup.
