Very philosophical and not entirely true! Freedom of choice is the right to make personal choice, even if it is wrong.

So basically you want to do things that are utterly stupid, may cause injuries to yourself and others without people keeping you from doing such stupid things? There is a difference between freedom of choice and freedom to harm yourself. But some people don't see that until it is too late.
IMHO it is a good thing that governments enforce products to be safe and energy efficient. A product that is dangerous and / or inefficient causes more harm and monetary loss in the long run.

Well, there will always be very stupid people!! Like those that buy Apple products for example ::) ;)
You are manipulating my meaning, not a politician are you ? ;)
Nobody gets things right every time and all the time, so you live, you learn, you make choices, some good, some bad, and you live and learn, it's life's process. Eventually you learn most of the con tricks and the ways of the world and the bad choices and mistakes are fewer, for most.
When governments, or worse, proxy governments like the EU, start to do your thinking for you, you never learn, you obey and lose the ability to learn and think for yourself, you become a consumer zomby, that is bad, very bad.
Live you life, learn by your mistakes.

I don't "get" 8K, but it was my understanding the loophole that many TV manufacturers were using was to have the default profile be a bit crap and allow the user to increase the brightness in the custom profile.
Or has that been banned now?

But effectively it kills the availability of 8K TV's, maybe until manufacturers can reduce power consumption, if possible. What is definite, if they do they will be even more expensive. An alternative might be to build into the software a warning that flashes up on the screen when the user has been watching for a preset number of hours, then they have a choice to turn off, or not.

Dunno, but I can say that generally, TV's are set at max brightness out of the box, this is guaranteed to drastically reduce the life of the LED back light, which is why most sets just manage to survive the warranty period before the LED backlight strips fail and the user bins it for another because servicing it exceeds the value of the set. All intentional by the manufacturer of course ;) So, first thing to do with a new set is go to settings and reduce the brightness.
MT:
Btw, voter sheeple should be punished to watch the propaganda machine (TV) on a 2x16 character display!
