| The great Dunkirk audio mystery |
| (1/1) |
| Neper:
A few ears ago, this contraption was standing in the port of Dunkirk, France, and it made the following noise: http://www.fotoralf.be/audio/dunkirk_mystery.mp3 The recording covers a complete sequence which repeated itself over and over. I've been asking ever since in various places online, but so far to no avail. Any idea what this could have been? |

bird sausage making machine high power ultrasound (some harmonics/resonance can probably hear) could be some binary ASCII code |

Only guessing. Fish/Whale, deterrent device, to keep them away from the port? https://www.salmonscotland.co.uk/facts/faqs/fish-health-welfare/how-do-acoustic-deterrent-devices-work |

Just based on the shape, I was going to guess it's a wind profiler radar, but those are silent and often have a large equipment van nearby. From the audio recording, I think it's a SODAR. I've never used one, but it fits the descriptions I read online. It looks very similar to a Remtech PA-05, Remtech being a French company. Edit: found a working datasheet link. It states 9 different frequencies, centered around 1 kHz. Sounds about right. Even the trailer looks similar, with the reflector stripe along the wheel well. |
