There is a pervasive political hypocrisy here in the US, where politicos say we can’t afford x (usually education, research, infrastructure spending and the like) while enthusiastically supporting much, much larger amounts of spending on the military industry and various corporate welfare or banking bailouts - the places the lobbying money and/or revolving door cushy after-government-service jobs are. This graph on the US annual discretionary spending gives some perspective. |
