| the new Apple iPad 2020 has a built-in Lidar: how does it work? |

| 0db:
Yesterday Apple announced the new iPad 2020. And I was surprised to see it has a built-in Lidar. I only know mechanical Lidars with a rotating sensor, while the Lidar mounted on the iPad is a solid-state device ... how does it work? How can it scan 180 degrees without a rotating sensor? |
| SiliconWizard:
It's probably LED-based, and from what I got, is not meant to work at 360°. Probably just a relatively narrow angle in front of the device, but enough to give more information than the usual distance sensors that are used in mobile phones and tablets. Probably something similar to this: https://orbitica.com/cameras/garmin-lidar-lite-v4.html |
| NiHaoMike:
The second generation Kinect is a LIDAR as well. |
