I thought so too.. that it was unusually well done.. Ive been following this story since I saw it.. It cant be THAT hard to fix this.

It would be good to figure out some way to image the underground structure of he water flow. Is Coachella valley below sea level, as there is water in the Salton Sea I could conceive it flowing first down, then, up.. up into the "geyser" from the Salton sea..

Where is the water in it coming from? Thats where I would start.. Maybe it could be imaged with radioisotopes or something?

Hmmm.. "Elevations on the Valley floor range from 1,600 feet (490 m) above sea level at the north end of the Valley to 250 feet (76 m) below sea level around (Thermal) Mecca."

That area is the center of the US date cultivatation industry which was sucessful and an interesting story which was a change instrumental in the ending of slavery in a number of countries. The cultivation of pearls did too...  Maybe the water originates in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coachella_Canal

The area around Niland and the Salton Sea is a rich geothermal area and there are numerous geothermal generation stations not far from this geyser.  Earthquakes may have played a role in the movement, but the energy powering it is almost certainly geothermal.

The area around the Salton Sea is packed with weird and wonderful and, sadly, not so wonderful things.  Very near Niland is "Salvation Mountain", a religious themed art installation built, by hand, by the now deceased Leonard Knight who passed away in 2014.  He was a warped but decent person that professed a religious view centered on love instead of the more malignant exploitation of modern televangelists my country (USA) is infested with.  Several of these televangelist types tried to worm there way into Salvation Mountain but Leonard could not tolerate them no matter how much they offered him.  I spent about 30 minutes with him some years before he died and as an agnostic bordering on atheist I found him to be among the most decent people I've ever met.

Not far from Salvation Mountain is "Slab City" -- a former Marine Corp camp that, years after it was abandoned, became a home to squatters many of whom with an artistic bent.  It is a bit depressing seeing people living at the margins like this and yet there is a kind of comradery that rises above the squalor and the desert heat.
