Title: The Official 2015 Christmas Pressies Thread
Post by: Shock on November 17, 2015, 04:23:43 am
Guess what? It's Christmas time! In the festive spirit of receiving, post your electronics related pressies for 2015. I've started a little earlier this year as it looks like some of us are already keenly into the festive spirit.

My presents have been passed to Santa for delivery, so I'll get the ball rolling...

4 Tektronix P5205 100MHz High Voltage Differential Probes (for repair)
2 Keithley 179 TRMS multimeters
5 3.5kW 16 Ohm dummy loads
2 Replacement Variac brushes
1 IET 510a micro ohm meter
5 Fluke 27/FM multimeters (couldn't resist getting some more)

By the look of this haul, you would think Santa loves me, but he knows I go without during most of the year to pickup bargains, so it all evens out.

Merry Christmas!

Well, a generous forum member here gave me this to have just in time for Christmas so I guess that counts.  Tek 7603 that has the 7B85 timebase and the 7A86 amplifier plugins and works 100% as far as I can tell so far.  Thanks Vernon, it's already getting good use.

That was interesting.  He mentioned the website http://www.vintagetek.org/ (http://www.vintagetek.org/) which I haven't gone through yet but I plan on as I get time.  I'd never run across this one in my travels so I'm sure it will enable quite a few hours of time wasting and envy.

I popped the cover off just to have a quick look at the guts and things were really clean inside so I plan on cleaning up the outside as best as I'm able so it looks good.  Being that this was a rack mount unit, it's got the usual scuffs on the case so there's nothing I can do there but I plan on racking it again once I can get something it fits.  This has to be one of the most generous things I've ever gotten from someone and I'll have to say that I'm extremely grateful for the stuff I got.  I did get a few other things while I was there that he wanted to get out of the way so I ended up with a Tek 453 that needs repair, a Pace de-soldering station that kind of looks like the one in the pic but needs major cleaning and restoring, a Dick Smith pre-amp kit that I know I'm going to have fun putting together, and a big magnifier lamp that I immediately put to use.

Christmas is actually here early but I don't mind at all.

I treat my PC to some more RAM and upgraded from a 690 to a 980 ti. After getting it home my GF started sulking and pointed out how it's a good thing I already have a SLI MoBo as she got me the same card. Unfortunately though I mainly use Linux so SLI is pretty useless most of the time, but I am an avid gamer so keep a Windows install around for the games that don't run on Linux.

On the electronics side I'm thinking of finally getting a DSO or a better logic analyser. Still not sure if I'd actually get any real use out of a scope apart from as equipment porn though.

Had a quick look today it's a 32" 720p panel 3-5 years old, has all the inputs including HDMI, better than nothing Santa. I've notice the rate of LCDs being thrown out seems to be steadily increasing.

For those of us in Australia, Dick Smith (consumer electronics chain) has just had a pretty large (in store only) sale going on over the last few days. Clearance LCDs TVs for 70% off retail, as well as cameras, laptops etc.

There is a rumor that they may have a further large sale tomorrow (Saturday, December 5th), can't promise anything, but on Tuesday and Wednesday people were standing outside the stores at opening time and bagging as much of the cheap stuff they could to resell. So if you are going to try and snap up a bargain I would suggest getting in quick.

There seems to have a been a bit of a trick in getting the discounts so far, as often staff haven't updated the stickers or know whats going on, you need to ensure they actually properly scan in the item. Some lucky punters this week walked away with 65" LCD TV's ($3000) for a few hundred.

Looks like the Fluke 8025B is ex Marine Corps from the calibration seal (last calibration 2012), it's been possibly damaged on the continuity and resistance functions, still has the 3 original fuses plus a spare inside, to the repair heap it goes.

Well, I've done good this year.  We got news that we'll be closing on our new house a week from today.  Incurring debt is not much of a gift so I'll add that this is a cash sale and will be paid in full on the 18th, no more landlords, rent or payments.  The house sits on a full acre to boot.

I know this isn't techy or electronics so I'll also add that it has that nice garage that probably won't see the car very much but will be wired for doing geeky things to electrons.  First thing I've got to do is take it from 100A to 200A service because I'll be installing central air.

Yeah, in Spain they used to just put large pieces of broken glass on cement to keep people out, not those fancy new techs.
But that was a while ago, now they do have palisade fences, razor wire and access control (no electric fencing that I'm aware)

Nice. Consider yourself lucky to be in a country with lots of space!

Rural Spain is pretty sparse and cheap (I've heard you could buy a full town for just $250K) Not sure how rural France is but it looks way better than the density of say, Germany.

Edit: Apologies, didn't look at your flag in detail at first glance I thought it was French, but wrong orientation.

Edit: I was wrong, towns go for less:

Next package has arrived with the Micro Ohmmeter, Tektronix HV differential probes and the Fluke 27/FMs.

Really pleased to get my Micro Ohmmeter in to play with over Christmas. Robrenz made a thread (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/ie/20/) on the 510A a while back. Highvoltage has the same model as well, I've got no kelvin clips with mine and am yet to make a pair.

I got some Flukes last year as well so brings the count to around a dozen, they have leads etc. The differential probes are for the repair heap.

Unknown condition, but look to be unopened with recent calibration. They need new cables as they were removed before selling (obviously a safety thing), so that's about $20. I don't own a Tektronix scope so having a plain BNC and external power is good enough for me. I hope to get 3-4 working units back out of them.

D'oh . . .

Didn't noticed the missing cables in the picture  :palm:

When the cables are already cut off, it is a good occasion to build in a separate power connector. Instead of this Tekprobe rubbish

Yeah that is exactly what I have planned, in fact I'm hoping to open them up hook some power and a small test voltage (at least before I install some silicon leads) then connect my scope probe and cross my fingers. It will be very cool if they have all had cable failures, less hassle for me.

The second Keithley 179 bench multimeter arrived today, shown in the photo with it's friend.

Underneath that is one of my new 3.5kW 16 Ohm dummy loads (minus the heat dissipation).
These are Utilitech 240V Universal (water heating) Elements and will end up in my new 4/8/16 Ohm non reactive dummy load (with a spare). If your interested in some they are sold at lowes.com item #362342 for ~$9 each, see below for a video explaining usage.

500mA max output.  Not sure what thats good for unless you are building usb 1.0 devices.  It goes up to 40 volts which is odd for so little amperage.  I'm not sure why you would want that.

On a bit of a serious note, if it doesn't work properly remove the guts (valve) and use it that way.  :o You won't have as much fine control, but it's still usable and an improvement over a needle bottle IME (I don't want to swap needles all the time to get the right drop size).

That said, you will notice the difference if you get your hands on a genuine one.  :box:

I'm a bit worried that her indoors might ask where it came from and I have no clue what's inside.... :phew:

What do we do guys ?, wait for the day or open it up ?.
Of course it's chokies so you'll be OK.
Save it for the day you spoil sport.  >:D

Do you have a Crocodile Dundee knife Muttley?

All my deer skinning knives, leatherman and SOG tools got knocked off in a burglary about ten years ago, all of my fish filleting knives are still intact though, I went out and bought a Stihl chainsaw to keep under the bed in case the arseholes ever came back, I hope they do one day, she needs a good run.

Here are two little gadgets made by eevblog members that arrived right before Christmas.

On the left a capacitor ESR adapter made by Jay_Diddy_B, it connects to a multimeter and then allows a 2 or 4 wire measurements.

On the right an Atmel to Samsung adapter made by wguibas to work with madworm's custom 858D hot air station firmware.

Just opened a gift from Franky http://stores.ebay.com/99centhobbies (http://stores.ebay.com/99centhobbies)
Pair of multimeter needle tip probes, alligator clips and Kelvin clips.

In with the multimeter probes I got from from a previous parcel I ended up finding a Pomona banana to BNC plug and a set of Fluke SureGrip AC220's. The irony is they are worth just about as much as a multimeter.

Franky's supplied Kelvin clips are very nice, seem robust and far better than any other cheaply made clips. Of course the proof is in the testing, especially curious about the gold plating plus coupling, but a really quick and dirty test with a multimeter showed no obvious issues.

I got some tools, which will come in handy for building a new workbench - in my case a mixed hobby bench, electronics on one side and model railroad on the other. Another present was an Arduino Uno experimental kit, with the usual goodies - 1602 LCD, pots, breadboard, LEDs, RTC, etc. Presents to myself include a Siglent SDS1102CML scope, an Arduino Nano, an Ethernet shield, and RS422/485 adapters.

Original plan was to build model railroad signal controls and interface them to the master computer via RS485, using an existing protocol. I've since decided to maybe do my own polling protocol with Ethernet at the connection method.

I've bought myself a longish length of LDF450 heliax, about 100 feet. Should have 3dB loss at 2GHz so will be useful before my 250W load to convert it into a 500W. It will also be good for 300W at 9GHz though I'll probably need to sort out another attenuator in the back end of it.

They were not exactly Christmas present but my brother in law gave them to me today: Radio Shack Transistor Projects Volume 1 to 4. I had the first one when I was young but gave it away when I was older to a young cousin just starting out.  There is a simple 3 transistors amplifier in the first volume that I tried building back then but I was never able to make it work, I did not know enough back then to figure it out but I think I'll build it tomorrow just for fun.

You are assuming that the variable number_of_sheds was previously initialized to zero.

Well you've got me there.  I've been spending too much time with C# and Java and not as much with C.  I tend to forget that some languages don't set a default value to new variables.

I guess ("Mike {0} sheds Harrison", number_of_sheds) is too difficult to use in normal conversation.

I took advantage of DesignSoft's end-of-year sale and bought a copy of Tina Design Suite Educational version.

I've been using the free version of Tina-TI for many years and I find it useful enough that I thought I could justify buying the full version.

A family member of mine is a banker and a politician, and he dumped - unwanted, unasked and unappreciated - a wad of cash in my suitcase.

So, I got a present, albeit I didn't want it.

I didn't get any electronic Xmas pressies, but I got a big one this morning:

I guess now I have to finish that project to the best of my ability :)

I've never heard the term "pressies" before.  :-DD

This was my Chirstmas score, which has led me to this site (and hundreds more in additional test equipment!) :)

I then decided that I needed one of these to match it, so with an Amazon gift card applied towards the price, I got this:
