The offline week experiment
(1/1)
RoGeorge:
Been in an Internet blackout experiment for about 7+ days.  :)
No phone, no TV or radio either.  Electronics yes, computers yes.

Been a very interesting experiment.  Saying this as a dude that lived a couple of decades before the Internet and mobiles era.  Highly recommended experiment.

From a pragmatic point of view, been surprised how many programs complained for not being able to go online!  :scared:  Arduino IDE, for example, only complained, while VScode python addon simply didn't start, had to use IDLE.  All this activation and/or phone home trends is a plague even for free and open source software.  >:(

Then, you'll find a strange feeling of not heaving online search and/or downloads available at your fingertips.  Partially been saved by the personal library.  Similar strangeness came from the lack of live content, being it the lack of social media or the lack of live AV streaming.  When you are offline, playing a recorded movie or album is not the same as playing the same thing from the Internet.  :-//

Regarding programs docs, many don't install more than a man page by default.  However, for those who have offline docs, reading the manuals proved way faster in getting things done than searching online.  That, you have to use what ever you happen to have offline, either books or software.

Overall an interesting, fun, and sometimes challenging experience, try it if you can get yourself an isolation week.  :-+

In my mind, access to the interwebs and social media are different things.  When I hear about 'internet fasting' or similar, I tend to associate that with social media.  I've got no problem with the former, and despise the latter.

Other than a very small handful of forums, I have absolutely no social media presence.  Never had a Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok or whatever else the kids are doing these days.  I've got better things to do and I'm not interesting enough to bother following.  It amazes me that people get so hung up on what everyone else thinks.

Recently I missed a medical note because all my providers use some kind of app messaging thing.  You'd think they'd call, write a letter or at least email - but nope, everything is communicated through an app.  It's nutty to me.

I think that sometimes all of us should have this isolation week for mental health
