Self inflating tyre
« on: September 25, 2012, 03:45:32 am »
So it's not electronic, but there's something awesome about this kind of mechanical solution to a problem.

Goodyear has made a tyre that regulates its own pressure using a self-inflation system inside the tyre.

From what i can tell, when the tyre pressure drops below min psi a valve automatically opens so external air can flow into a special cavity.
As the wheel rotates the squashing of this cavity pushes that air through a one-way valve and into the tyre to inflate it.
Then it automatically stops when the correct pressure is reached.

I remember reading about something similar except it was built into the wheel, so it would work with any ordinary tire.
Cryptocurrency has taught me to love math and at the same time be baffled by it.

Cryptocurrency lesson 0: Altcoins and Bitcoin are not the same thing.

Some form of peristaltic pump built into the tyre, Nature was there first as usual.

self inflating is of not much help at all without self sealing capability. when this tyre hit by a nail it will simply flat both the tyre and the cavity, you still can stuck in the middle of nowhere.

I think they're intended to make up for the natural slow-leak you get as air escapes between the rubber molecules.
So you don't have to keep checking and topping up.

Better is a central tyre inflator. Just has a tube that is plumbed through the axle or a free turning union and a pipe to the centre of the hub. Works on Gelandewagons and timber haulers.
